lag with my Wii -- help!

OK, once again, I'm turning to Massassi for help. I've already tried searching for possible solutions elsewhere, particularly the Wii forums, with no luck. I may yet post my problem on the Wii forums, but if at all possible, I'd rather go through you all first.

So I've had a Nintendo Wii for at least a couple months now. I tried hooking it up to the TV downstairs, because there's lots of room, and there was a bigger TV and nice sound and all that jazz. Unfortunately, the responsiveness on my Wiimote seemed to lag. Having moved it upstairs, in my much smaller space (approx. 2'-4' feet away) on a 20" TV, it works perfectly fine. Now my dad recently replaced the TV downstairs with an awesome 50" high-def widescreen TV, so I moved it back downstairs, hoping to play it on that, but I still have the same problem. There's no sunlight, I'm standing where I'd be playing when I turn the system on (approx. 6'-7' away from the screen)... but no luck. Distance doesn't seem to be a factor in the lag issue, or at the very least, the lag still seems to be present when I'm as close as I can get to the TV/sensor bar.

Does anyone know what could be causing the lag? If so, does anyone have any suggestions for fixing it? I'd appreciate and thank anyone who can give ANY help I could get on the matter.

Define "lag".

Is it just in the visuals (ie do you get the rumble and sound feedback when you move the cursor over something at the same time, and just the visual doesn't update/) or does EVERYTHING lag behind your movements?

It would appear everything lags behind. It's hard to be certain, as the apparent lag effect is no longer than half a second at most, but it's there. I tried swinging my hammer in Super Paper Mario, and the rumble seemed to match up more with the visual and not when I was pressing the button. If knowing is really an issue, I can check on audio too, but I honestly didn't know what to use as a good test for the wiimote sound.

What connection are you using for the video on all TVs?

Upstairs?

Old Downstairs?

New Downstairs?

Same connection for all of them -- standard AV cables. No S-video. Well, no, that's a lie. My upstairs TV doesn't use S-video at all. Both downstairs had s-video plugged from the VCR/DVD player to the TV, but I can't plug S-video into the VCR/DVD player so when I hook the Wii to the player, it's just AV cables without the S-video. I suppose I could try seeing if i can hook it up directly to the TV with S-video, but it'd seem aweful strange if that were the problem...

I remember reading something on ign.com that newer TVs actually have to convert the composite to HD or somethingamabob, and it caused a slight bit of a delay between moving the controls and drawing to the display, much like you're experiencing.

If the lag happens because you're going through the player, and hooked up directly to the TV fixes it, you're not down any money. Otherwise you'll have to fork over some dough for S-Video or the Component hookups and still go straight to the TV.

(I wish I could find that little blurb somewhere so this explanation would be a bit more detailed. :saddowns: )

Hell Raiser: It's cool. I'll try hooking up directly to the TV at some point and see how that works. The only real reason I'm skeptical is because I don't remember experiencing any issues when it came to playing my Gamecube.

UPDATE FROM EARLIER ASSESSMENT: I am, however, less skeptical now because, using MZZT's "home button" test, it might be that only the visual are lagging behind.

Still, any other suggestions while I wait to test out the direct-to-TV hookup would be advisable.

Yea, go out and buy the component hook-ups. You'll be glad you did. [http://www.hellraiser64.com/tdir/forums/images/smiles/cheer.gif]

Clarification: I have the s-video cables, it's just that the DVD/VCR player is lame and has a bork S-video outlet-thingy. I don't have s-video hooked up in my upstairs room because I currently have a bunch of older systems running through a switchbox, and it appears to require that they all be s-video or none, so yeah... I dunno.

I just want to enjoy my Wii on the big widescreen goodness :(

I hate it when people think the sensor bar does something. You can unplug it and replace it with two candles.

But it does do something...

It emits infrared light at different points in space. :D

I hate it when people fling their wii-motes into their TVs and cause a worldwide stink. :(

I can't imagine it'd be a very reliable method though :P

And hooking it up directly to the TV solved the problem. Thanks Hell Raiser!

Yes! *highfives Gebohq* :neckbeard:

On a completely different note, Super Mario Strikers Charged has online MP, and I think I might pick it up just for that reason alone. :)
