Expensive.

I'd make my own mini town with those mini models and with bonsai trees.

Old news. I used one to create a small model when I was taking a Solidworks (an industrial design program) class.

I'm not surprised if many universities have a machine like this for years.

Yeah, they've had those for a while.

It's like a more useless ******* child version of CNC.

They're not useless. They're excellent for prototyping, among other things.

They are expensive, but one guy is making a version to sell to hobbyists for about $5,000. It would be a model maker's dream.

Apparently they even have ones that use metal vapor.

I have some relative who is a jeweler, uses 3d models quite a bit. They had the machine there and everything. I had them print a 3d protein model as well, was pretty cool beans to see where the cofactors went, just to hold it in your hands.

I saw someone print out the pistol from halo with this once.
It was life size too. Really stinkin' cool.

I watched that same video with my sculpture teacher the other day, we were shopping for these for the sculpture studio.

No cus CNC makes stuff that you can really use.

CNC drives our steel fab equipment, and it controls the rolling mills at the place I used to work.

CNC just means computer numeric control.

This uses some ******* form of CNC too.

Having actually watched the video, I can confirm that those models in blue showing internal stresses were very nifty indeed. Completely redundant, but very very pretty.

So, how far are we from the star trek replicator then?
Wikissassi sucks.

Well, it still can't quite create any reasonable object in any combination of materials in just a matter of seconds. It's a good step though!
