Because expanding our understanding of what life is is a waste of money. Aside from meeting our foreign cousins, perhaps establishing new fields of science, we need to know what's out there so we know how to deal with it (living or not). Our planet is dying, exploring beyond our planet is the first steps of building a life raft.
