The first four minutes were so boring I closed it. The intro itself takes three minutes and then they started talking about all their stupid buildings. I don't care! By the way, they're all very fancy... that right there is a ginormous red flag to STAY THE HELL AWAY, because THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY, DUMBASS!

Just watch the last five minutes. I'm still not sure if it's disturbing or funny.

A religion so bad that science and all other religions willingly band together to mock it.

I'll stick with Christianity, thanks.

(And no, I did not watch the whole video; just the first and last five minutes.)

Yeah, that's the best thing about that South Park ep. They were pretty accurate.

Only because the bible has a ton of vaguely prophetic verses you can super impose on pictures of tragic events.

I hate scientology, but claiming that it is less of a religion than anything else is silly.

except that it is easier to take the bible as being a story of metaphores than the story of scientology. that and you dont need to keep paying money before you are able to read certain parts of it without getting pnumonia (which supposedly happens if you read a passage on scientology that you havent reached a high enough level to read yet)

How many people consider the bible a symbolic book of metaphors and mystic teachings? I'd be willing to bet 75% of Christians consider the book literal.

At best it's historical fiction because nothing in it (aside from the existance of a few people) can be proven as fact.

Has anyone here ever read any Sufism material? Rumi perhaps? He writes entire books of poetry using Mohammad and God as characters in a metaphorical morality discussion that ends in the acceptance that Love is the only true path to "God." Which, as defined by rumi, is happiness and eternal joy in life, not in death.

Some believe Rumi was an atheist mystic, which is totally awesome. Mystic writings that don't take themselves seriously are a lot easier to read and believe in than a book full of magic and ideas that are supposed to be 100% true, and absolutely unbelievable.

Furthermore, mystic writers don't attack groups of people and call them hell bound sinners. They simply talk about the best ways to achieve happiness without effecting others'.

This has obviously the become underlying basis for morality through out modern society, including that of probably most evangelicals, but really, who's to say it's right? I mean, really, does it have any kind of rational meaning at all? Why is that necessarily more "moral" a more selfish path to happiness. What is "moral'?
2007-06-16, 11:34 AM #29
Wow, you're right Obi. Wouldn't it be easier if we invented an all powerful being to give us a single standard for morality? A reference point for all beings that would be the end-all, know-all of morality and idealism?

At least we start somewhere. You haven't got anything to back up any moral judgment you've ever made, yet you still do it.

Its pretty easy to have morals without a book. Humans have these things called brains, they're great for making your own morals on the spot. For example, my morals are like this: Killing people bad! Sleeping in the same bed as my girlfriends little sister... Fine by me.

@ minute 18'ish they bust out the charts that show how their Auditing or "Intensive" program will actually increase your IQ.

@ minute 30:30 they mention how you ascend to higher organizations as you increase your training level within the program.

What if everything that exists is fragmentary, incomplete, aborted, events with ends but no beginnings with us constantly making categories, seeking out, and reconstructing, until we think we can see total love, betrayal and defeat, although in reality we are all no more than haphazard fractions. The mind, for its own self-preservation, finds and integrates scattered fragments. Using religion and philosophy as the cement, we perpetualy collect and assemble all the garbage comprised by statistics in order to make sense out of things, to make everything respond in one unified voice like a bell chiming to our glory. But it's only soup. The mathematical order of the universe is our answer to the pyramids of chaos. - Stanislaw Lem
