Would you play a new JK mod?
2007-06-20, 7:33 AM #1
I had a fun idea for a mod years ago, but because of laziness never did anything about it. It's a new gameplay type, most of the work will be done in cog, with a couple of new skins. I'd really like to do it just to see how the gameplay works out, if it's successful I'd like to bring it to a more modern engine.

However, to test gameplay I'd need players. I'm not sure how many of you still have JK installed or would be willing to install it, but if I did this, would you play?

Depends, tell me more about the concept of the mod and i'll tell you if i'd play it.

I don't want to reveal too much at the moment, but I will say that it's a variant of CTF.

(I'm an idiot, I just realized I posted a thread almost exactly like this a year ago and forgot all about it. Since someone has already replied I'll leave it up)

I was hoping for a single player mod, then I would have been interested.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I have no PC.
2007-06-20, 8:08 AM #6
I have no JK.
nope.
2007-06-20, 8:17 AM #7
No. Probably not. Never really played gameplay mods.

However, if someone released a new JK/MotS SP level, I'd most certainly test it and if it was enjoayble and stuff, well, that'd just feel great. Then again, when latest Life of Grismath was released, I tried to play it but got stuck and then started to notice that my JK and MotS tend to crash so bleh :|

It depends on the concept, and how busy my life is upon completion of said mod.
2007-06-20, 8:54 AM #11
Could be fun. I still have my CDs.

Eh, I take back my vote. I would at least try it :neckbeard:

It's annoying that you'd keep it secret. Secrets don't do well for a 9 year old game. Give us an idea of what it is so we can better support or not support it.

I'd play it if it was really good. I reinstalled JK for LABORATORY, after all.

For a CTF-ish mod? Certainly.
2007-06-20, 10:52 AM #17
I'll only play it if it's head-and-shoulders above the best existing mods.

I'd certainly help to try it out.

I really wanted to play MikeC's Pirate Recon for Mots... sadly he disappeared before he could finish it. :(

I'd probably give it a try, but I don't play much JK anymore... just a little bit for nostalgia anymore.

I still got my JK discs. I'd be willing.

I still play JK CTF at least once a week, so of course I would at least give it a shot. However, I'm one of those folks that thinks that NF CTF as it is played in maps like "The Challenge at Nar Shaddaa", "Team Fusion", or "Ground Zero II" is about as perfect as gaming gets and would be more impressed with new maps than with a mod (unless it was extremely good).

Depending on the mod, but, yes, I would.
Nothing to see here, move along.

If it looks good.

Yes, that means I want good graphics.

Hey why don't you just update the engine and textures and skins while you're at it! And you could revamp the AI so that they are playing CTF with eachotehr throughout the game and also atack you!

:(

While I do hate you, the main reason I wouldn't is because I hate JK and I don't want to reinstall it.

If you made the mod for a good game I might think about it.

never mod jedi knight, on principle. Interacting with jedi knight motivates successively intricate fiddling that can only end in frustration at the limitations of the incomprehensible code, for which we have not the (also likely incomprehensible) source code. The best hope to salvage nostalgia is to write anew sensible code that assimilates jedi knight content. Before long into this journey it will become apparent how silly it is to obsess over a small company's low-budget spin-off of an amateur's uninspired fantasy

instead why not pick up a modern video board and code for that?
2007-06-21, 12:30 AM #32
Or just write a brand new game. You can use C# with SDL, OpenGL and ODE bindings. Use GtkRadiant for levels and something equally well-known (like MD3s) for models. You'd probably be able to write an FPS that way in as much time as it'd take to make a full JK mod.

also, I already did this and that's pretty much how it was

i'd probably take a stab at it. it might even cause me to finish some maps.

I'll play it, I still have JK installed.

Blood Asp, if you have anymore maps like dm-onslaught to finish that would be sweet. The map is great on an lcd screen (laptop) but I can see how people complain on regular monitors.
This is retarded, and I mean drooling at the mouth
2007-06-21, 3:25 PM #38
i'd give it a shot. CTF was always one of the more fun MP things for me.

Alright, thanks all. I'll give it a go sometime this summer, sooner rather than later.

Now I just have to remember how to write cogs.
