The free FPS thread

There are a lot of good, free games, but few that are also shooters, so I decided to make a thread about them. Go ahead and post links to your favorite free shooters, first or third person. Action/adventure games in an FPS format work too.

I just discovered Nexuiz, which is supposed to be simple, raw and fun deathmatch action.

I think Tribes 2 is abandonware now. I don't have a link available atm
"Jayne, this is something the Captain has to do for himself"

"N-No it's not!"

"Oh."

I wasted about a year of my life playing Enemy Territory.
Pissed Off?

Enemy Territory is fantastic.

Nexiuz's textures look quite familiar.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's a free game after all.

It's inspired by Quake III, it might use the same engine even.

Here's a list of free first-person shooters.
2007-06-23, 5:57 PM #9
Ah. Should try some of those.

It would be cool if Massassi could develop and kick around a new, free engine.

Tribes and Tribes 2 were released for free? Hrm... Tribes was the only game that I could actually play online over my 28.8k connection years ago.
<Rob> This is internet.

The original Hidden and Dangerous is free now. It's pretty old, but still a decent game.

Some friends and I used to play Warsow, which is based on the Q2 engine. Gameplay seems simple at first with dm and guns and stuff, but it has all kinds of wall-jumping combos and stuff that are all based around being really good at strafe-jumping. It's also incredibly fast-paced, so combined with strafe-jumping it gets you pretty good at Quake type games.

Massassi is nowhere near as organized as it needs to be for that to happen.

Its the motivation thats a problem. Were there sufficient motivation, it would be possible for the organization to be worked out. But that motivation isnt likely to exist across the board (for any kind of large project)

Ah, that game. My friends and I still play co-op on it.

Here's a hint for you: hidden and dangerous does not apply to the players.

It applies to the Perfect Dark farsight-cheap aim the AI has.

It's not just motivation - in the 9+ years the site's been running we've all aged: even I managed to knock together a (small) bunch of crappy maps in my spare time (and God knows I spent a long time trying) when I was at school. Now I have a job, a girlfriend and a house of my own - If I have an hour spare one evening I'm going to fire up my 360 and play worms, not chip away at 1/250th of the time it takes to make a good level.

I play FEAR (CTF) quite a bit...when I'm not playing JK. It's one of the few FPS games where kicks and punches are a viable means of attack.

OpenArena is an open source version of Quake III. After the game's source was released, the OA team made content for it.

This is just a beta, but playing a UT-like FPS in your browser is wicked awesome.
