How can I diagnose whats wrong with my PC without being able to swap out components?

My PC makes me feel :suicide:.

I need to find out whats wrong with it but I have no idea where to begin working out what the issue is. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes HDDs vanish, sometimes I get "BOOT ERROR PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISC". Sometimes Windows BSODs, sometimes the spash screen on boot up loads real slowly and takes ages until the next part of the boot process begins.

After installing windows it can take up to and over a week before problems become apparent and I need to format and reinstall windows yet again.

Sounds like a dying hard drive or bad ram to me.

Yeah, I'd go with bad HDD or bad HDD controller.

Or bad cables.

i'll pop an IDE drive in there and put windows on it, see if it works nice.
