Either I go to lollapalooza with this girl I'm going outish with and some random gay guy, see Pearl Jam, see Daft Punk, and maybe, see Schming.

OR

I get a 1973 Honda CL100 Scrambler motorcycle.

MOTORCYCLE.

I own your bike's older brother;

1973 CL-100 (Your bike)

1966 Honda S90 (I have one of these, this color, but this isn't mine. I'm also replacing the stock 90cc engine with a more modern 110cc engine so I can use it as a daily rider)

Vintage bikes are more important than girls. Mostly because they are total chick magnets.

Yeah, the bike would be around $700 including the cost of getting it and sprucing it up to my liking.

This girl wants to fly to Chicago, so the flight would be about $375 for a round trip, plus $195 lolla tickets and then the cost of food, drink, etc. while I'm there (I'd be staying with friends).

So I feel comfortable spending money for one, but not both, this summer.

Whoa.... nice bike, Rob.

Some of the pics above aren't specifically the CL-100, but similar models.

I agree with the chick magnet thing. Plus, how badass would it be to drive back to university via motorcycle.... oh man...

They're good bikes. VERY reliable. And you can beat the piss out of them.

I'm not familiar with how easily you can get parts.

The s90 has like the same bolt up pattern of 4 wheelers its size, and alot of them use the exact same engine, so finding parts for mine is REALLY easy. (How else do you think I found a bigger engine?) I just need to decide if it ruins the aesthetic quality of the bike. I like it's sorta art deco flair. :P
2007-07-02, 12:04 PM #11
OH, and thats a GOOD bike if you've never really ridden before. It's not that fast, and it handles like a brick on a lake.

So theres no real chance you'll start doing things that'll get you hurt because you can't go fast enough and you know you can't corner that well. (I think they used CL-100's for endurance races because they ran so well)

Thats why I like the S90, because I do have experience, and when I get on something much faster I tend to do ALOT of dumb things.

Just make sure you get fitted with a luggage rack THAT DOES NOT WELD TO THE FRAME OR REQUIRE YOU TO DRILL HOLES. You'll need it for a box to carry the chain you're going to need to use to chain this puppy up. Make sure you loop the chain through each rim twice, and through the body atleast once.
2007-07-02, 12:05 PM #12
Yeah, I hear they're really reliable. :D How is yours with gas?

Also, I'm not at all experienced, so I want something that I can start out with. So this is good in that sense.

Mine won't run right now. :( I haven't worked out all of whats wrong with mine. It's been sitting for about 20 years, dry. I flushed all the gook out and put new oil and gas in and stuff, but it won't run for more than about 20 seconds. I probably just have to take it apart and clean everything really good.

I don't know if I want to put the effort into that engine. The 110 cc engine has electric start, is 12v (instead of 6v) and I KNOW it runs.

But the S90 supposedly gets anywhere between 60-70 miles to the gallon. Probably between 58-65 with a bigger engine.

ALSO, the CL-100 has a high mounted exhaust. It was marketed as what would now be considered a dual sport bike. (For off road and on road riding)

That doesn't mean you should offroad with it, it's definately not a good bike to offroad with.

Also watch the exhaust, I don't remember if they get hot on that, but your leg is basically going to be right on it.

Girl.

The bike will be something you can buy later. The event with the girl might not be.

Are lollapalooza tickets that much that you can't have the cake and eat it as well?
Think while it's still legal.

I've ridden on the back of a touring bike through the Davis Mountains in West Texas on the way to a Natural Spring Lake to swim while listening to This Desert Life with my dad and it was one of my favorite experiences ever.

Just don't put off getting the bike for too many years. Jump on that ASAP. Just be safe and reasonable :D
2007-07-02, 9:31 PM #32
And why won't your dad let you get that? You are a grown man on your own, si? Unless he's paying the insurance.

OK, you worded the poll badly, and I'm betting many people voted before reading the post and just clicked for the girl.
I know I did, but having read things now, I say go for the bike, it'll last longer.

How fast can those go Rob/Gris? I had a 1978 100cc Suzuki a while ago that struggled to hit 55mph.
