From what I've heard about this jump, a good portion of the guy's body was numb when he got off.

I believe his right hand went numb during the third jump, I don't think it went beyond that.

That is the greatest thing anyone that has ever done anything has ever done. I think I would pay a million dollars to do that. Holy ****, that's amazing.

I don't know anything about these things, but isn't he supposed to burn up?

Nah, he isn't coming in fast enough. These jumps are very old, the entire program ran from the 50's to the start of the 60's. I don't think anyone has come close to breaking the records set by this man (Cpt. Kittinger), and won't until later this year.

How impossible would it be for me to do this? I think this would be the greatest thing in the world ever. Who do I have to call?

USAF and NASA. You might want to offer about seven figures though.

(After the private space industry kicks off, you might see people doing similar things)

I had no idea that was possible.

Maybe someone familiar with this will respond, but I've never found a definitive answer: did Kittinger break mach?

Well at the heights he jumped from the air would have been thinner, allowing him to reach a much higher terminal velocity. Sound also travels slower through less dense mediums. So it's possible he broke the speed of sound at high altitude. Doubt he picked up enough speed to break the speed of sound at sea level though, since the maximum speed claimed is 715 mph. Skydivers can reach about 200mph during normal altitude jumps if they position themselves correctly so that's still damn impressive.

Technically, he wasn't jumping from "space" -- he was ~30K meters up, which is somewhere in the middle of the stratosphere. But it's still freakin awesome.

I would give almost anything to do that. The only problem is that I don't think I would ever be able to get myself to leave the upper atmosphere and return to Earth.

Wow really amazing. They must have gotten pretty anxious while waiting to get up at the right height.

What jets can go that high? I'm thinking of SR-71, but I heard some other one before.

Lucky Stephen Hawkings, he is going to have a sub-orbital spaceflight '09.

Kirby, if you want to have Zero Gravity flights, you can always try these guys. Tickets are $3,675. Not the same as the jump, but looks pretty fun.

No, I just want to fall from above the clouds where I can see all of the stars, and then come down to earth. I believe that'd be the sweetest thing. Ever.

Jet? None (at least nothing officially...). The third balloon went nearly 20 miles high. Scramjet? Wait 15-20 years and see what aircraft are designed using a scramjet. Aircraft in general? Well, the X-15 easily broke that ceiling (by more than three times the altitude actually), but it was more of a manned missile than anything.

[Edit - oh, NASA's Helios can fly pretty damned close to that altitude, but it's nothing more than a wing with engines.]

OK, we've got enough smart on this forum to do this thing. Get me into the stratosphere and get me a backpack full of parachute. GO GO GO!
