“Its rock-hard surface can take a full-on assault from a baseball bat, yet remains flexible enough to allow you to kick, leap and roll with perfect ease. Crafted from cutting-edge science, its unique molecular structure means that while providing armoured protection against crude concrete and even barbed wire, it remains light enough to allow you to run at high speed. In a nutshell, d3o is an advanced polymer with an intelligent molecular structure that flows with you as you move but, when shocked, locks together to become rigid enough to absorb impact energy. In its simplest form, it is like an automatic knee-pad that can be sown seamlessly into a pair of jeans.”

Didn't skiers in the most recent winter Olympics have something like this?

Yeah, but not just something like this - it's exactly this.

That is so awesome. Darkjedibob was telling me about something like this used in body armor for deflecting bullets and knives. This stuff looks awfully thing for that, but something even four times as thick would still be thin for armor standards.

Spectra Shield is rated to stop 9mm rounds at just two layers of fiber sheets. Combine that with Shear Thickening Fluid units (think about the thickness of a slice of presliced american cheese) and you can stop anything from high-powered rifle rounds to an assault from an axe.

The award winning, JPMS ‘Best Product of the Year’, Racer glove is set to be released for general retail at the end of March 2007.

The gloves, specially designed for motorcycle racing, are the first to include both shock absorption and protection.

I wonder how this stuff would make falling from 800ft and slamming into the earth feel.
