This is way cool, if you are at all interested in the future of computers.

Quantum computing, which holds the promise of [...] secure communications and the ability to decode encrypted conversations by terrorists and others

So how de get both secure communications and the ability to decrypt any conversation we want?

I assume they're either referring to the fact that conventional encryption will be dead as a duck when this stuff is available, or the tamper-evident nature of quantums, which means you will know if anyone has even so much as read you message. Whichever they mean, it's sloppy writing.

[Edit: dead as a duck? double-you.tee.eff? Also, I like the political spin - "Hey! We can decode terrorists' messages! One up on the bad men!"]

Interesting how none of the scientists mentioned are of Western origin.

Also I love how they throw in the "terrorist" thing. There's a running joke among research scientists in that the way to secure funding is to show that your research will be useful in the "war on terror" and even the most abstract theoretical physicists are coming up with wild and intangible explanations for how their research can be used against 'terrorists'.

Yeah doesn't it suck how every time somebody invents something new they always tend to try and relate it to current world affairs? Man don't you just hate the world! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

Correction--did you read past the first 5 words of the second paragraph on Mort's post? Because it sure as hell doesn't seem like it.

Yes, I did. Not sure why it didn't seem like it.

I'm guessing that what they mean is that with quantum encryption (which is in limited use already, and not really related to this development) you can create an unbreakable communication system. However, with quantum computers, conventional encryption algorithms that rely on so-called "one-way" functions can be easily broken.

Because it just doesn't. He's talking about people inventing things that have nothing to do with keeping terrorism away, and how they get grants for it anyways through BS explanations.

Do I actually have to explain this?
I was pointing out that this doesn't only happen with the terrism thing. It's nothing new. That's just how the world works... you need grants? You show the people with money how it could benifit them.

Not from the UCLA team anyway. There are still two other teams that reported the same success with different techniques.

You fund a quantum computing research project out-of-pocket then.
