Lets all sit back and watch the show, guys. Sit back and watch the world go to hell around us.

I dont know whats sadder.....That children are the targets of knife attacks, or that its so common that someone thinks theres a market in it for protective clothing.

Uh.. my lord.. that's just plain wrong. I mean, the knife resistant clothing is a good idea, in theory, i suppose, but the thing it represents is just.. ugh. the fact that they are necessary is just horrible.

I think it says more about parental paronoia than the frequency of child-stabbings.

I agree with that completely, but, you have to admit this is pretty horrible. the ting is, it seems that the parents believe this is ncessary because there has been a recent rash of child stabbings. Who the hell stabs a chid? why? Its jsut plain sick. I mean, a mugging at least has a reason. greed, yes, but at least its a reason.

Ohh, another stupid gimmik to suck money away from the easliy worried. If a kid was kinfed he wouldn't even need it to go through the skin to kill him. The force of it would kill him. This reminds me of a bulet proof brief case I saw in counsumer reports once.

That's because it's really hard to get a gun in Japan. So they use other methods to kill people - gas attacks on subways, knife attacks where 8 kids get slashed during school, etc. Banning guns doesn't help anything, it just forces people to be a little more creative.

Or not. The 'force' of a knife blow won't kill a kid, because it's just...not that hard of a blow, really. I mean that's like saying someone could punch a kid and kill them, and to do that you'd have to be REALLY friggin strong.

actually, a hard punch to a few areas (like the solar plexus) could kill someone.

There is a martial arts move cthat if applied correctly, can kill with a single hit.

One of the whole points of using a knife though is that you if you hit a vein you don't have to keep going at the person, they'll bleed to death. Does that suit look like it's gonna protect the kid's neck? Even so, if someone got into a school to kill kids, its not like the guy doing it couldn't just hold the kid down and pull the jacket away from the kid's neck... It's really pretty impractical.

I know, Brian, I was joking. Usually in anti-gun debates someone brings up Japan and how peaceful it is. Except that people who want to go around killing people in Japan are forced to use close-range weapons, like a knife, and they usually get away since it's just a quick stab and they walk away from the scene.

All you have to do is force the heart into arrhythmia, or rupture the arota. That's something the Heimlich Maneuver can accomplish; it doesn't have to be some special martial arts move, any massive blow to the chest can do it.

(Not quite, Thrawn, it's caused by a blow just before the peak of the T-wave, which is actually about 3/4 of the way through the pumping process when the ventricles are forcing blood out. You prematurely force all blood out and the lower heart quivers and cannot fill with blood again.)

Roach is partially right. It happens with every beat, a fraction of a second for the heart to "restart", if you punch them in that fraction, you kill them. It's like how kids get killed by getting hit by a baseball at 20 mph, or something along those lines at little league games. The force of the blow normally would hurt, but it just hits at the right moment.

Lord knows I've been punched in my chest enough times that you'd think I'd drop dead by now. Hell once I was hit so hard, I couldn't do any chest exercises for over a week. I'm alive. Sure I hate being punched in the chest BECAUSE of that fraction of a second, but it's very difficult to get it to work.

Now lets get back to the subject and get off this touch of death stuff.

If the knife didn't penetrae the coat it's still penetrate the skin. Besides a couple kids get knifed, and all the sudden it's some huge crisess. It was just one guy or a couple of guys and they'll be picked up. No need to buy eight thousand dollar jackets.
2004-07-24, 11:51 AM #28
The product just seems aimed at a market generated by fear. Irrational or rational, I'm not sure. The text along with the photo makes it sound like there's some rash of child knife attacks but the article that it links to cites only two incidents. Seems to me that it would be like marketing bullet proof jackets to kids here in the states.

A LOT of kids get stabbed in Japan every year. Don't ask why, but they do. Also, how is the knife gonna penetrate skin if it doesn't first get through skin.

Have you never been bloodied by something that didn't actually penetrate your clothes? A blunt force that is strong enough could certainly do so with out ever actually cutting threw anything.

That's different from it penetrating skin. Also it'd be more likely to give you a nasty bruise than anything.

I totally agree except that the blunt force could break the skin more similar to a "tear" than a cut or bruise. I don't think he worded his post correctly but maybe I misinterpreted it. Certainly a blade that failed to penetrate clothing would not penetrate skin as if the clothing were not there although it could still cause something similar to a cut due to the force of the blow.
