Is Super Mario a childhood icon for you?
2007-07-19, 11:55 AM #1
The first game I ever remember playing was Super Mario World. It came bundled with my SNES and I remember my uncle coming over to help hook it up. It was really a big deal.

But yeah Super Mario and I, we go waaay back. Anyone else feel the same way?

---
edit: I first met Mario on my grandma's big block gameboy, not the snes.

Certainly. It's like my childhood icon of skill. It was one of the few things I was genuinely good at. And honestly, I was GOOD at Mario. I'm really bad at almost all platform games now. :(

Hell, at this point, can we consider him a cultural icon? I'm sure everyone knows who Mario is as much as Ronald or Mickey.

But yes, Mario definitely holds a special place in my childhood.

I remember never being able to get past the second world of Super Mario Brothers as a kid. I recently went back to try to beat it and I did it without too much trouble. ;)

No. I didn't start playing games regularly until I was 10 or so and even though I was still a child then I didn't even play Mario games so :colbert:

No.

My house has never been graced with the presence of a product built by Nintendo.

Edit: And yet I had a video of the TV program once upon a time. I do not know why.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

First game I remember playing was Marathon.

Yes, my family toiled under the wrath of Stalin for many a year, so Super Mario became a specter of oppression that has haunted me since childhood.

Super Mario World on SNES is one of the greatest games of all time. I would have to say yes to this question, I thoroughly enjoyed Super Mario Brothers 1, 2, 3, World, Land, 64, New Super Mario Brothers, and about 1/4 of Super Mario Sunshine before I got stuck and returned the rental.

Of course.

Yeah he was something of a gaming icon for me. My first owned game was Super Mario Bros. 3 and it came with the NES.

I was introduced to gaming through the PC and not a console. The first console I owned was a PSX. My first console icon was Mega Man (Legends style) and, get this, Masters of Tiras Kai or whatever the hell that starwars fighter was.

On the PC I got Mega Man X as my first 'real' game. The Crystal Caves / Secret Agent dude and Cosmo from Cosmo's Cosmic Adventures were the first major video game characters introduced to me. My first game (Other than Mickey Mouse's ABCs) was X-Wing, then the above platformers, followed by TIE Fighter, Warcraft I / II, and Empire.

No, I had a Genesis, not an NES. Mario, to me, is more a reminder of the posers who actually went outside when they were kids, and just pretend to know who Mario is because retro gaming is somewhat hip now.

I know every single secret and every single 1-up location in all levels in Super Mario Bros 3 to this day. So much useless knowledge, I can't even remember all 50 state capitols. I played the stuffing out of that game.

Fun fact: Using Game Genie, you can actually unlock a hidden, playable level to the original NES SMB3.

There was a number of left-over stuff in SMB3 apparently -- see here. The Game Genie probably went to one of those.

Also, SMB3 was the first game I ever owned, and is still one of (if not my #1) favorite game of all time, and know where most everything is in that game as well. I like to play through the entire game with close friends when given the time.

Oh, and to answer the original question, yes, I consider Super Mario as a childhood icon to me.

I'd have to say the day I got SMB3 for Christmas and the subsequent days of playing were the happiest days of my childhood. :)

I loved playing Mario with my relatives in Norway. When I got home I had to contend with Giana Sisters on the C-64, which was the same game with different graphics.

Later we got a Game Boy and I was amazed by my brother who played through Mario again and again (it got harder every time) until the batteries were empty.

Even though Link was always a bigger icon for me, Mario has his place.

It's a tie between mega man x, mario, sonic, and link.

There's no way to choose one over the others.

I never owned an NES, SNES, or Genesis. All I had was an old Coleco Telstar Marksman (woo, six variations of pong!).

However, since most of my friends had the common systems I played them often. At home I mostly played PC games (Duke Nukem, Hocus Pocus, Jazz Jackrabbit, Jill of the Jungle, Wolfenstein 3D, ROTT, etc). The first modern console I owned was an N64, followed by a PSX that I almost never played.

Sonic can do most of that, and do it faster.

Oh, and he has awesome music, an excellent cartoon (SatAM), and goes friggin SUPER SAIYAN when he gets all the emeralds.

Yes. Especially to Jazz and Jill. Another two childhood heroes for me.

I forgot Scorched Earth, I played that one religiously. Whenever we'd have a family event at my house my cousins and I would end up doing 10 player games for hours.

Oh yes. When I was about five we moved into a new neighborhood, where I befriended the 4-year-old next door who had an NES. That was my first experience with a console system and my introduction to Mario (3). A year later my mother surprised me by bringing home the newly-released SNES from her shopping trip at the mall. I was actually a bit disappointed at the time, since the SNES had relatively few games whereas there were stacks and stacks of different games for my friend's NES. The SNES came with Super Mario World, which I grew rather attached to and finally "won" the game (beating bowser) within the year. I was about 6 at the time, which is both cool and sad now that I think back on it... :downs:

I loved that game.

Yes. Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, and all the Game Boy Super Marios were what brought me into the video gaming world.

On my fourth birthday, i got an NES from my dad (which was also the last gift he ever got me). It came with a mario/duckhunt 2-in-1 game and one orange zapper gun to kill the ducks with. I played that game without end for hours and days of my life, beating it in only a week or so (which is pretty good at 4). I gathered more and more games, and by age 6 was hopelessly addicted to video games and have been ever since.

A week later, i realized i had also gotten a dog on the same birthday, but damned if i know where it had been hiding that whole time. :ninja:

Pfft, he never fixed a leaky tap, and if he did he isn't a plumber, because if he was he'd still be on his first cup of coffee by the time he ran out of time for the damn level.

You know up until this day, Mario is still a bit of an original character. He's a middle-aged, fat Italian plumber. You don't tend to see those kind of characters that often.
