From a monologue to JediGandalf:

(3:39:37 PM) Grismath: So my grades last semester were right on the border between keeping and losing my scholarship.
(3:40:01 PM) Grismath: Part of this was due to a computer error in one of my classes' grading system.
(3:40:20 PM) Grismath: But even with that grade, I would still be 0.01 GPA points away from the target.
(3:41:07 PM) Grismath: Anyway, because I got A's in both of my summer courses (which do not factor into per-semester scholarship considerations), my dean wrote the financial services office a letter of advocacy to appeal any decision to withhold my scholarship.
(3:41:42 PM) Grismath: But apparently, a glitch in THEIR computer system threw me into some sort of loophole so I would get scholarship money regardless of my grades.
(3:42:12 PM) Grismath: And so my dean's letter about renewing my scholarship struck them as odd, since I wasn't on file to be losing my scholarship to begin with.
(3:42:29 PM) Grismath: And they hadn't billed me for the tuition that would have been covered by the scholarship.
(3:43:14 PM) Grismath: So they just called me saying, "oh, sorry, your dean's letter alerted us to the situation, so we're going to fix the problem and you will be billed the $20,000" unless you win the appeal.
(3:43:17 PM) Grismath: x_X
(3:44:11 PM) Jedi Gandalf: Oh my ****!
(3:44:52 PM) Grismath: Yeah, talk about unlucky.
(3:46:13 PM) Grismath: I mean, despite my thinking I should have a chance at getting the scholarship back, strictly speaking and looking at the numbers, I should lose it. But to think that the only actual reason I'm losing it is because a letter intended to PREVENT me from losing it alerted them to a glitch is just... wow...

:( Time to start writing an appeal letter.

It's not so much the $20,000 this semester that I'm worried about. Yes, that sucks. But a friend in the Financial Services department told me that they've become a lot less permissive with appeals. I'm more worried about the full $40,000 I'll have to pay senior year and the debts I'll have to pay off for the years after that... vibes?

That's really frustrating. I'll bet they let you back in though, all things considered. They can't be that heartless.

I don't start till spring. :/

I'll probably do alot of art history because I like art. Bespeckled with things I'd be interested in learning, like musical instruments, maths, and computery things.

But I'm one of those people that just wants to go to college to learn. :/

(PS, atleast I'm moving away from my mama and my daddums when I go to school)

Screw doing better in school. Use my method: go to a cheaper school!

Well, if you don't take the hard stuff don't talk.

(PS, I hope hanging around with your buddies in the big people's dorm prepares you for life. I prefer to take the economical/useful education rout myself. Each to his own I suppose.)

You would be the one to look down upon an art degree, Obi.

Yikes.

Reminds me of the time I was only 2.25 points away from getting accepted into university. I think that was yesterday.

You obviously have no idea how hard getting a degree in one of the fine arts really is.

You have no idea what you're talking about. To be fair, neither did I until I started taking music seriously, but...get a clue before you speak.

I think the dean's letter will help. But I've kind of been a disappointment here... I turned down a few higher-ranked universities to go to BU, and apparently I was admitted as one of the two best students in the honors program and thus the business school. But when I got on campus, I was coming from a little, semi-rural, all-male, Catholic school with a graduating class of 50.

So I was like, girls?! booze?! night life?! oh yeah, going to class... :gonk:

I really kind of have to get my **** together. And for the past year, I really have been, but it's tough to get back on track with even one bad semester bringing you down. So hopefully I can convince them that I'll maintain my recent good performance.

P.S. Rob, I also wanted to go to college to learn instead of jumping through arbitrary academic hoops. In addition to my dual concentrations in management information systems and international management, I'm taking a minor in philosophy. But I've been learning the hard way, as you might learn, too, that even if it's not bothering you most of the time, the system is wicked powerful and catches up to you if you don't dance to the music. Do your own thing first, but it would behoove you to jump through some hoops if you have the time, too.

This is a majority of people's first year/semester. Don't worry; you're in good company.

Music and other arts can indeed be a very challenging. But "going to take some art history" and and some other random stuff he likes on a whim, is not. That sort of attitude does not speak of the sort of dedication it would take to actually pursue any kind of real kind of learning in the subject. It's fine if you don't know what you want to do, but if you are a person with little drive and aspiration and no experience, you really shouldn't be commenting on the grades of people who might have them.

Woah; good luck with the appeal.
I'm so glad I'm an UK citizen going to a UK unversity- compared to the costs of studying in the US, £3,000/year tuition really isn't that bad.

You don't know much about art, or art history.

Thats okay, your mommy probably didn't teach you much about either.

I kind of consider web development kind of difficult if you're going to do it right. It surely isn't easy for everyone to learn an instrument either.
