Feedback on new level/file pages
2007-07-23, 12:14 PM #1
I have been working on the file system a bit to make things easier to post, and I made some improvements (I consider them improvements) to the look of the level pages. Here are two screenshots, I am interested in reading your feedback. In the process of generating all the thumbnails, I have been going through and fixing all the screenshots that were broken or malformed (a lot of them were BMPs with a JPG extension, a lot of them had character case issues in the database which worked fine when we had a windows server but don't work fine since we moved to linux, and some of them just had missing shots for some reason). I have about a dozen more to fix before I re-run the thumbnail generator and make the changes live, so let me know what you think.

Oh yes, much better. Being able to see the screen shots without having to click to view them is much better. However, the title should be smaller. It looks funky for them to be so big and act as links.

The title is kind of huge.

I like being able to see the screenshot thumbnails on the page itself; however, the formatting on the right hand side doesn't look too organized.

I think having the title use a format like this would look better:

Remnants of the Empire
Massassi Temple > Jedi Knight > Single Player

I like the idea for screenshots showing.

But would be possible to keep banners for the Level Info and Level Ratings? It's was a bit easier, atleast for me, to distinguish level info and ratings from the rest of the text due to the green leaf banner instead of large font.

definitely like the new look better, but i agree that the title is a little overwhelming.

Okay, here is a newer one with suggestions regarding the title.

http://www.massassi.net/etc/newer_level.png

Echoman: I understand your concern about the banner. I put some more cellpadding/spacing in there to hopefully clear things up. I really don't want to put the banner back because it looks funky w/out the full border/centered title, and I'm trying to get away from centered titles. I've been going through reading this book, "The Non-Designer's Design Book" which is helping. I could revisit this later if others find it annoying :(

That looks much better now. I like it. :D

Those changes look great, Brian. It's great to see Massassi moving forward again.

The current formatting on the right side might be more distinguishable and work with a solid dark green background. A la: http://www.sorrowind.net/imagecorner/146/131185224461.png

I like having the ability to see the screenshots now. I missed doing that when I played JK.

Hrm, that looks really odd to me.
2007-07-23, 2:15 PM #13
What about something like this: http://www.massassi.net/etc/newer_again_level.png

I think the green makes it look odd... I'm not convinced it's hard to discern even w/out any added color or borders, the titles are big enough that it's set off.

me likey!

edit: i take that back. i like the black background better. the bright green is an eyesore.

I like the plain black background the best so far with the latest title/links change. Perhaps, try a dark gray or a dark green for the info on the right.

:)
2007-07-23, 3:00 PM #16
I don't like the green behind any of it, even the breadcrumbs under the title.

Definitely better than the current one though :D

I like the one with black background from post #8. Good job still putting work into Massassi!

It looks good, I like the screenshots feed since several files had two screenshot links but either no or one screenshot.

Also, please keep the old comments and ratings, they are very helpful.
This is retarded, and I mean drooling at the mouth

Yeah, after looking back at it the green does look kinda strange.

I think both are a change for the better, and prefer the "newer" edition.

What do you think about a light grey behind the level info, as before?

I know, I was pointing it out in case it also indexes the massassi programs downloads and is totally screwed up. :awesome:

I'm more amazed you went through and found all those #s!
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Well I just finished fixing all the broken screenshots. I'm going to d/l them all and run the script locally to ensure that all the screenshots turn into thumbnails properly. Wish me luck.

good luck!

Well, I fixed them all. The script found one other issue that I fixed this time. There are 388 levels without screenshots, but the other 2571 files have screenshots. I'm going to sync the admin scripts and then run the script on the server tomorrow night. Now bed time.
2007-07-24, 12:29 PM #37
Well, I did it. Everything went well with ONE exception. I have this code that was supposed to not only generate thumbnails, but also rename and convert all files to JPGs, but the conversion code was busted so now there are a bunch of GIF files with JPG extensions. Opera and firefox don't seem to care, so I'm going to leave them for now. Later I'll make a script to go through and reconvert them. Anyway, the new levels section is now live, let me know what you think.

Very cool! Is the text on the new pages intentionally smaller than the size for the menu on the left side and the rest of the site?
