For the past six months i have been working for a call center, doing technical support for mcafee virus protection over the phones, and it has been the greatest job ive ever had. I work at home, which means i never have to wake up early, get dressed, leave the house, or (if im in a really lazy mood) shower. The company gave me two computers to take home, which aint the fastest things in the world, but at 512 & 768MB of RAM, and 90MB video cards, they have allowed me to play World of warcraft, surf the web, chat, and use email again which had all been mostly denied to me for the last year.
Whats more is that one of the computers was given to you to break and infect with viruses and spyware and stuff so that you could learn how to get rid of them, so they really didn't care what you did to them or install on them, so we were free to use them for all the gaming we wanted.
The calls were repetative and dull, and ended up being more about helping dumbasses learn how to right-click things and informing them that java updates are not hackers then it actually was about viruses. But because it was so repetative and burned into our skulls by the end of month three, we basically spent our time playing MMO's, video games, watching tv, or anything else you can think to do in your own home, as long as you could do it with the minor incumbrance of wearing a wireless headset around with you.
The pay wasn't half bad at 10.50/hr, considering all you had to do education-wise was show a better than average proficiency with computers in our area, and in a small town any gamer could pull it off. I have been living in a blissfull world where going to work meant logging onto my gnome warlock for 8 hours a day, doing work that never required me to break a sweat or smell like food.
But today, we have moved to a new client and are now a customer support line for some medical insurance company. They are taking away our extra computers and putting us on calls that require us to be staring directly at our screens for 9 solid hours. We have only a three and a half minute par time on each call, and there are never any gaps between them. When one is done there are forty more waiting in line, and we are only paid for time we spend talking so we have to be constantly speaking to someone and typing and clicking away, without a minute to enjoy the perks of being at home.
They have cut our pay back to only 9/hr and all our schedules are being changed to fit the new hours of the company. i used to sleep till 4 or 5 in the afternoon before i had to get out of bed, and now i have to be up at 730 in the morning everyday. The new company will be monitering the internal chat lines on the VPN to make sure nobody gets chatty during phone calls, and we are supposidly required to dress well while on the phones.
Without the comp they provided i am forced to once again rely on a 256MB of RAM, 8MB video card computer. This thing had never even been worth an internet bill to me.
Luckily i have been using the money i made to build me a new kickass computer, but it is missing a moniter and an operating system before it will be operational. So for the next few weeks, while i try to complete it on reduced pay, i will have no gaming computer at all. I may choose not even to come online, except to check my email.
I suppose great things dont last forever, and this had to come to an end sooner or later, but i am damn sad to see it go.
