I was just offered a free 1mo trial for Amazon Prime...meaning I can pay $3.98 for overnight shipping on this order -- vs free 5-9 day shipping. w00t. :D A shiny new Nikon D40 should be here Friday instead of in a week or two! :neckbeard:

D40?

I'd rather have a D70.

And I'd like a D200...but it's just not in the cards at the moment. :P

Or how about a real camera like a 5D?

Can you afford to buy me one? Because...well, I can't.

And really, I'm not sure that your average person could tell much of a difference even in an 8x10...but what do I know.. :P

I was simply pointing out Canon's digital camera superiority.

Fanboi. :P

Incidentally, everything I've read has pointed out Nikon's D-series superior build quality when compared to Canon's Rebel line..image quality is supposed to be very, very close as well. That's what I've picked up from dpreview, anyway.

Funny enough... I never mentioned Canon's Rebel line of cameras.

Apparently you have a bit more disposable income than I do...what camera do you have?

You seem to have the attitude of 'Pfft, what'd you buy a BMW M3 for, when the Ferrari Enzo is so much better?' :P

I actually don't have a still camera. My video rig is a Sony HVR-Z1U with a Redrock Micro M2 Cinema Lens adapter. I need to get some more gear for it, but the ovarall budget of the Rig has already gotten to around $7500.

I'd suggest you go after a Canon. I have a Powershot A520 that takes better pictures than my girlfriend's POS Kodak, and has about 1.5 megapixels less resolution than the Kodak. She even has a lens that's twice as powerful.
I bought that Canon because everywhere I looked, reviews were consistently better for Canon than comparable models from the other heavy hitters. That's my 2 bits, but I'm no expert.

I'd caution you on keeping that Prime membership, JLee. I ordered 5 things with that trial membership, and UPS was late 3 times out of 5 orders. I used next day once, and it was help up by UPS and took 2 days to arrive after being shipped. The item was shipped by Amazon from a distribution center about 400 miles away. USPS would've gotten it to me in the same amount of time.

So, I decided that I'd just skip that whole order and take the 2 day shipping option, which was free. I had an order that was placed 2 DAYS after another arrive 1 day before it. All in all, I had 1 order arrive on time, 1 a day early, and the other 3 at least 1 day late. The one that arrived early shipped out of the same warehouse that is like 400 miles away. For some reason, Amazon doesn't care after it gets out of their hands.

Canon is great, but surmising quality relative to Kodak is like saying "Hey, my car is one of the fastest because it's faster than this lump of **** on the ground."

I'm going to cancel it before my trial expires. It was too convenient, though - just as I'm ready to buy a camera, they offer me ultra-cheap shipping. :)

I thought about buying a point & shoot, but decided to go with a DSLR. I'll probably pick up a pocket P&S fairly soon, just to have something I can fit in my pocket.

Yeah, I love the Prime membership. Especially if you live with your family - they all can get on it too for free. Meaning if you order alot it's quite nice

I just got a Pentax K100d with the stock 16-55 lens and the 50-200mm lens for 600$. I really love this camera, the body and the lenses seemed to have a much nicer feel to them than the D-40. That's probably because I don't like to use Auto-Focus, but I'm probably the exception. That and I get to use the awesome prime lens my Mom bought for her Pentax in the eighties.

Anyway, I think you'll like your new camera. I'm having a blast with mine. Real manual control FTW.

Eventually I may buy pancake lens so I can carry it in my pocket easier.

My uncle may buy a Pentax DSLR eventually..he has a film one now.

I like auto-focus, but haven't had a camera with manual focus yet..so I might play around with that too. :)

Just remember you have to buy Nikon lenses for the D40 with the autofocus motor built in. Most of the less expensive lenses will not have that motor.

Yep, I'm aware of that, but thanks for the warning. Next up is probably a 55-200mm, but I'll wait a while & get used to the camera first.

You don't have to get those lenses, you just won't have autofocus if you don't. And honestly, you're not a real photographer if you use autofocus.... unless you do war photography or something like that.

Well, since I don't have a 'real camera', why should I bother being a 'real photographer'?

**** canon

any company that forces you to buy new lenses for every camera line you choose it just terrible.

Nikon lenses are all retro compatible. your brand new lens you get with your D-40 will still work with your nikon 8006.

on that note, if you want really good glass, go with the Nikkor-D series, best optical qualitythey offer. little pricer than the G series, but it they have the anti-scratch and color coating on them.

but really theres a rule of thumb about new nikon cameras "wait for the s" (ie - D70s, D2xs, etc.) thats what they release after most of the problems with the initial release are worked out.

personally i'd love to have a d200, but an 1500$ body isnt in the budget right now. maybe after i get my raise.

the only problem i have with nikon atm is that they are still refusing to use full frame ccd chips, so your lenses get shortened. this is the ONLY thing i like about canon's d line. as far as image quality, i've run direct comparisons with my friends cameras between the 5D(when it first came out) and the D70s, and frankly while the 5D was slightly shaper than the D70, the colour quality was quite lacking.
My girlfriend paid a lot of money for that tv; I want to watch ALL OF IT. - JM
