You install a fresh copy of Windows XP, and the exact nanosecond you click on "Windows Update" you get like 450960989078960 different kind of viruses and spyware...

I mean, how does Microsoft expect you to have a secure system when you can't even ****ing update the stupid thing... This happens EVERY ****ING TIME and I usually have to reinstall Windows like 500 times before I actually don't get any viruses. Not to mention the lovely "RPC" error that only appears when your half way through installing all the updates so when you start up Windows Update again, your SURE to get a virus...

Same thing happened to me when I reinstalled XP. I think I got most of the Blaster and Sasser variants before I finished patching, and I'm on dial-up.

What I did was I downloaded all the updates and patches, stored them on my HD, -then- installed XP and patched it before connecting to the internet.

But Win2k IS a damned good OS. It has it's share of viruses, but it seems as though XP has much much more. One of the reasons I don't ever want an XP system. That, combined with the fact that once I turn off all the worthless garbage in XP, it's basically 2k. So why upgrade to an OS plagued with loads of viruses? I think I've only been hit with a virus 3 times since I installed 2k over a year ago.

Still, I'll have to admit that does suck for you. I'd tell you to get some anti-virus software on there before you hop online to update too, but that might not do too much good if the anti-virus software isn't up to date.

Here's what you do. When you format, leave the ethernet connection unplugged. Then when you first boot turn on the windows built-in firewall. Then start > run > and type "services.msc" and press ok. Double click on "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" and go to the recovery tab. Set all the failures to restart the service instead of the computer. Get all the windows updates, and then you can turn the windows firewall off if you'd like.

The copy of Norton we got for our laptop required you to go online to register before it works. As soon as the laptop was connected, we got the msblast virus. That pissed me off.

Norton Firewall? Why not throw your computer out of the window? That makes it secure, too.
Easiest way is just to disable all listening services you don't need. I don't have any English source for this but if you trust google translation or your own grasp of German you should read this. There you can download a little tool that does all this for you but you have to make sure to take the LAN option.
