So, Before Google...
2007-08-01, 1:40 PM #1
Before you began using Google, which search engine did you primarily use? If you still use that particular one, or a different one than Google, then specify it in your post.

For me, it was Altavista. I remember hearing about Google while I was in my freshman year of high school, and it's been my home page ever since.

Altavista

And before that, long long ago, Webcrawler.

Altavista and HotBot.

Altavista... in fact, when I used to search for things even back in 2001 I always used Google, Altavista and excite. Since then it's been Google for 99% of the time (found some ILLEGALZ OMG mp3s via Altavista that Google didn't find once).

Yeah, you forgot hotbot and dogpile. I voted for YAHOO because I used it more than hotbot, but I always liked hotbot better because it ranked massassi highest for the search "jedi knight"

This should be a multiple select poll. In the old days, when I didn't find something on one engine, I'd start over in another. I voted AltaVista because that's where I would usually start, but Yahoo, HotBot, Lycos, and Infoseek were always next inline.

Yahoo and Jeeves. Jeeves' search was actually really good for getting a better context on the search than yahoo. "nude pics of Christina Aguilera" always returned better on jeeves.

Jeeves. I still remember when it used to show sample searches that other people had entered, and once when I was looking something up it showed an absolute gem. "wat is masturbation and how do u do it"

Before... Google?

*ponders*

Is this like a time-before-the-big-bang question?

(I wasn't on the internet enough before google to ever have much occasion to use search engines)

Before google you had to use multiple search engines to find what you wanted sometimes.

I voted other since I wasn't loyal to one particular search engine before google. I used to use both yahoo and altavista.

I used to use yahoo. Seems like the cool thing to use was altavista, though. :P Guess I wasn't 1337 enough back then.

I used northernlight. Seemed to work quite well at the time. I used Lycos before that, for a brief period.

Damn. There are some young people here if Google really was the first they ever used.

Altavista. Like Vegiemaster said, it seemed to be the cool one. But then Google came and all cool people quickly switched to it.

Before google I used dogpile, mostly. Not sure which search engines were used near the top, those ones got the most use from me.

edit: I see now they've melded them all into a single listing. Interesting..

I use(d) Altavista. Never used Google by the way. Too bad you can't vote for two options.
