Bridge collapse in Minneapolis

Quote:
At least six people were killed when an interstate bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapsed Wednesday evening, plunging cars and chunks of concrete into the Mississippi River below... The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET). There were 50 to 100 cars on the bridge at the time, according to early estimates. Witnesses described a "dust cloud" as the bridge collapsed... Witnesses told CNN a school bus filled with children was on the bridge when it collapsed, but they also said the bus did not drop into the water and it appeared that the children had all been evacuated.

:( I hope any -ians and there family members that may be around that area are safe and are not suffering from this tragedy. My prayers go out to all the families and potential victims of the incident, that must have truly been a horrifying experience. Apparently it's beginning to storm as well, and since it's nightfall, the rescue operation is going to be even harder.

I checked everyone out. A family friend's daughter literally drove over it 2 minutes before it collapsed.

Just so everybody knows (if you care) Me and my girlfriend are both OK. We're about 30 minutes south of the bridge, and were nowhere near it at the time.

I've checked everybody I know around here and everyone thankfully has responded and seems to be in good spirits.

Kirbs, Genki, and any other Minnesassians -- You're all ok, right?

Yikes.

At least it wasn't Indianapolis, the city named after Indiana Jones.

Damn :(

I posted about something similar last summer about an overpass out here. There were less death, but I think luck has a part in that. At least 5 people had been crushed under the over pass

I hate when something like this happens.

I wonder if people will have bridge-phobia for the coming days.

No.

The probability of getting killed by a bridge collapse is pretty much less than everything else in the entire universe that can kill you.

I think it's really sad that it takes something like this for them to actually start inspecting bridges.

Apparently there is a highway overpass here in columbus that was built in the 1970's and hasn't been inspected once since then. They inspected it after this happened and it failed miserably, like many other bridges in Ohio. Like I said, I think it's really sad that it takes something like this for these people to get off their asses and do their jobs.

I just learned something! My dad's cousin was on the bridge with her 2 kids when it happened!
There's a story about it in our local newspaper, but I'll quickly explain it.

The red circled car is where they were after the collapse. They got out immediately, raced to the top of the section they were on, and slid between a 5 foot gab to the ground quite a ways below. They're absolutely OK, and her fast acting and smart thinking saved her and the two kids. I guess as soon as she hit the ground she realized she wanted to go help the other victims (she literally immediately acted on instinct to get off the bridge) but she had no way of getting back up.

Crazy.
