Driving to florida!
2007-08-10, 9:32 AM #1
So yea. Im pretty sure im out of my mind, but im driving to florida next week to visit my friend in tampa.

We're taking an infiniti g35 x for those of you that care >_>

Anywho. Thats a long drive. So we're planning on switching off every 4 or 5 hours. Ive never driven more than 8 hours, so I dont know how hard this is going to be.

Im just wondering if any of you have driven this far, and if you have any advice. Especially about the roads on the way down there. I assume most of the trip is I-95. Anyone think that I should take a different route to avoid congestion / cops / NoESC?

I just drove to Cornwall and back via London, about 9 hours or so either way. It wasn't so bad.

My friend in the Air Force is leaving to Florida today for a two year assignment. He's driving his Camaro 92. He wont have anyone to switch off with though, so he's probably going to get in a wreck. Mostly because he drives like a Lemming, but anyway. Good luck with that MB.

The closer you get to the shore, the worse I-95 gets. I-95 will get bad around the Philadelphia area (though not as bad as I-76) if there is a lot of shore traffic (like on Friday and Sunday). However, most of that congestion should be orthogonal to you, since you are going south. It might also be bad around the Chesapeake Bay, though I haven't been down that way in a while.

Yea. Also keep in mind the first 5 or 6 hours of the drive is the early morning hours.

We're planning on leaving new york at about 10pm.

Buck and I have done it every year for about 16 years now, sometimes doing it twice. From WI, stopping over at a hotel, it takes about 23 hours or so, and that does include speeding. God knows our rout takes us through the traffic of Nashville every damn time, so if you can avoid it please do so. Georgia also tends to slow things down.

Speed, get chased by the cops, lose them and then post a thread about it so people can be all whiney when you claim you're a genius. Wait, that might result in you leaving Massassi.

nope.

The interstates in Georgia are full of hicks that can't drive and cops so be careful.

Also, driving through Virginia a few weeks back with the band, we hit a flock(?) of bats. Those are worse than bugs on a windshield, plus, you can't stop there. It's bat country.

I just took a trip to Phoenix this last week (from north of Tulsa, OK). I drove there, stayed a week, and drove back. That's about 16-20 hours each way, depending on how you drive it. I decided to do it in one go. My advice is: have plenty of music ready (I don't know what it's like over there, but over here it's tough to find a radio station unless you're IN a city) have lots of snacks and drinks, and don't let your fuel go below half a tank or so. That one may not be an issue out there, but since I was driving through vast stretches of nothing, I figured it would be a good idea. Also gives you more opportunity to stop and stretch your legs.

95 runs down the east side of the state. If you're coming in from the northeast, I'd say I-95 -> I-10 -> I-75 -> I-4/275.

No reason to have to drive across Florida, and from what I've seen, 75 is usually easier to deal with than 95.

How far a drive is that for you (don't know where you live). It's about 24 hours for me. Longest I've ever traveled by road, straight, was 12 or 13 hours, but that was on a bus (on New Year's day, surrounded by irresponsible teenagers who had had way too much to drink and were puking the whole time).
2007-08-10, 6:35 PM #19
Where are you coming from again? I've done the FL - NH run both ways...FL - NJ both ways, and Michigan to FL. Caffeine is your friend... :)

If you take 95, you may want to take the x-95s around major cities...295, 495, 695, etc. That's what I did, and I don't recall getting stuck in traffic too badly.
woot!

I live about an hour's drive south of Tampa. It's alright, I guess. If you like cigars and loud clubs (I don't really prefer either) Ybor City is kind of cool. We found a neat taverna down there once, although the belly-dancer did try to get me to dance with her... Anyway, just be careful driving in Florida I know there are some crazy drivers like anywhere else. We just happen to have way more elderly and still more than our fair share of rednecks.

My boyfriend and I drove from Albuquerque, NM to Santa Cruz, CA in a straight shot, to and from. About 20 hours to get there, and then about 16 to get back. We used MapQuest's terrible directions first. MapQuest took us through a scenic route which also happened to be a route that was under construction everywhere...so traffic was terrible. We switched off every 3 to 4 hours...but that really wasn't planned. We had each gotten about 4-5 hours of sleep the night before and sleeping in the car didn't work out well. The 3 hour mark was when we started passing out.

The drive back was great. No offense to those living in CA, but driving away from there was the best part of the whole trip. We really didn't have many shift changes the way back. My boyfriend drove most the way out of CA, I drove the entire stretch of AZ, and then he took over in NM again. All I can say is that it was an experience.

we used to drive to florida every year. Yeah, it's just 95 all the way down and we used to stop at every Cracker Barrel on the way there

I do NY <-> FL a few times every year. From Rochester, I don't even hit I-95 until South Carolina.

390 until it ends into 86, then follow 15 through Penn down to I-81, take that to I-77, down to I-26, ride that to I-95 and finish out the trip.

I drove 15 hours straight from Minneapolis to Knoxville. I wouldn't recommend it. You guys need to sleep while you're not driving. And don't grow balls and keep driving if you get tired.

Yea thats the plan. Ill sleep through the night while hes driving. So when hes done driving, ill be refreshed and good to go for a few hours. And if we're both too tired we can just pull over somewhere and sleep.

OK, so this is really sad, but this got me thinking, and according to Wikipedia it's a colony of bats.
