Seeking Flying Droid from Baron's Hed
2007-08-14, 12:41 PM #1
I've been looking for a model, name, or images of the white little droid that flys around and pesters you at the Canal that leads into Baron's Hed in Dark Forces.

Thankx in advance for anyone who has any info.

Took me a while to narrow it down, but I was compelled to search because I should've known this. It's a Mark IV Sentry Droid, usually with a IM4-### designation. Produced by the Empire

May I ask why you want to know this? I think I might know where theres a 3D model of this droid in blender, but I'm not exactly sure.
Nothing to see here, move along.

If you don't already have them, try downloading the Jedi Knight level editors. JED or JKEdit, both are freeware. For your purposes I would recommend JKEdit, as you can see things textured in real 3d. Also, you can easily find out about JK objects, including guys, weapons, ships, tables, etc.

Let me know if you need help with it...

... You can see 3d objects textured in JED too.

SF_GoldG_01: I'm working on two Star Wars projects, one for the PrBOOM on the Nintendo DS, and the other for GzDOOM. Both are self sufficiant, meaning that you will not need DOOM in any way to play it.

I do not have screen shots up yet, due to the fact that I work in a sloppy manner and jump from one thing to another, thus none of the texture sets are complete enough for a screen shot, though I should have something around the corner.

Thankx for all the advice everyone, not to mention all the great maps and what have you. The Star Wars universe is by far my favorite Universe to game in and it's good to see other's are as enthusiastic about it! :)

So you are making a star wars first person shooter based on an updated doom port?
2007-08-15, 4:31 PM #12
For two different DOOM ports yes.

PrBOOM for the Nintendo DS which in the end gives you an experience much like the classic Dark Forces. In it I have re-created Baron's Hed (complete with moving stream) and other early DF 1&2 levels as best as I can, though since the game takes place earlier than DF, Baron's Hed will of course be a bit more lively, and less run down, though still a "hive of scumm and villainy". Of course the whole game will not consist of mere remakes ore modifications on DF maps as the majority of it consists of new maps, and of course a completely new story line.

As for the GzDOOM project, which will not be ready for some time still...

...it is my HUGE project which I've been hacking away at for about 6 years now. It began for DOOM Legacy, but once GzDOOM was released, I dropped nearly all my work and began again from sacratch since it is actually possible with GzDOOM to emulate the majority of the key elements in the DF2 - Jedi Knight expeience. Granted the game will look and feel quite different, but at the same time much of the atmosphere can be easily duplicated.
To sum it up, GzDOOM take classic DOOM and brings it partially up to date with many modern 3D game engines. Dynamic Lighting, 3D Models, Fog, Sky Boxes, Swimmable water, Hi-Res textures and sprites, sloped surfaces, 3D floors, translucent floor and walls, advanced scripting languages, etc. You can of course find out more about it here:

I'm aware that I could just use the Jedi Academy engine and produce something that looks a lot more modern and what not, and I'm sure I could save a lot of time by level editing that way too, but the thing is that I started this project years ago, and would have to see all of my GzDOOM editing knowledge, not to mention all my work go to waste. Besides I really like the whole retro feel this engine gives, and it is endless fun to see how much you can press from a limitted enviroment.

This thread is awesome, because people actually responded with helpful info.

Except for me. I'll just say that I'm interested and will look forward to any developments.

That sounds really awesome. I replayed Doom on one of the 3d-accelerated linux ports (I can't remember which one). It's like a whole new game with real 3d, antialiasing, texture smoothing, transparency effects, mouselook, etc. I had a blast. I actually bought the Doom pack with Doom 1, 2, and Final Doom or something. Then I just copy the wads to the correct place on my linux filesystem and I can play them all in stunning 3d. I would love to download a starwars themed pack of resources. Keep us posted!

So what does it take to get doom running on a DS?

Wow, those screenshots look better than a lot of JK user-made content.

A DS flashcart like the M3 or R4 and the prBoom client. It runs any .wad files, including doom, doom2, tnt and plutonia experiment

Yes, you will need a DS FLash cart like the M3 or R4 as Glyde Bane stated. There are other brands, but these two (which are pretty much the same hardware) are probably the best for you're money out there atm. They are highly compatable with pretty much all software out there and you can order one for about $30 if you look around the net.

What there are, are little DS Carts, that hold SD Mini memory cards.

Basically they come ready to go, though it is advised to download and update with the software from there page.

Anyhow, once you have your cart and your memory card, and you have the software on it up to date (which is as easy as copying files from one folder to another basically), you will then be able to copy DS software onto your memory card. Anything with a .NDS extention will run, just like an EXE in windows or what ever. It's really quite simple.

As for DSDOOM or DOOMDS, what ever they are calling it now. Well I'm not sure as to where the main project page is because there are at least 2 or 3 people out there messing with the sources, so I put up the best version on my page here for now:

http://files.frashii.com/~sp00nz/Doom/files/DS/DSDOOM/

With this you will merely extract the archive so that all the files are in a folder called DSDOOM or DOOM or what ever. You will then need to copy over your commercial DOOM iWAD files I.E. DOOM.WAD UDOOM.WAD, DOOM2.WAD, TNT.WAD, PLUTONIA.WAD. You don't need them all, just the ones you want to play.

Once you got all this in order you merely copy of the DOOM folder to your Memory card. Then take the memory and put it into your M3 or R4, boot up your DS, go into the Folder and launch DSDOOM.NDS.

EDIT: I uploaded an early attempt to get Quake DOOM running on the DS. I'm unsure if it will crash on you, or what bugs it may feature atm, but you can use it instead of a DOOM iWAD if you don't have one.

I got a little section about the DS here:

http://starwarslegacy.net/NDS.aspx

As for the Star Wars DS project (as it is called for the moment), you will not need your original DOOM files to play. So if you don't have DOOM, no worries. :)

Oh and as for the screen shots. Those are not in game, they are merely old screen grabs of some Jedi Knight models I took about 2 years ago. So what you are looking at are merely old bases for my sprites, though in the GzDOOM project sprites retain there original quality very well as I don't have to shrink them down too much to get them to appear correctly in the engine, also I don't have to limit them to a 256 color pallette. The ones you see there are merely fillers, though I'll have some in game screens up soon enough, then you can see how well they actually appear in game.

Now as for the DS version, the gfx are a far cry from looking like that...

...imagine those images, now imagine them as viewed in the original Dark Forces, then you'll have an idea how it pans out on the DS. ;)
