Playing JK Over Again
2007-08-19, 11:24 AM #1
So I decided to play JK over again. I'm on level 10. I'm just astounded at how plain everything looks. I didn't realize just how bad all these fan-made addon levels make the original levels look. I guess it's a sign of the times, I remember I first played JK on my P1 166 and later upgraded to a 233. Problem was, I only had an s3 virge card, which wasn't compatible with JK. So I later bought a Voodoo 2 and I was so amazed.

No I am completely annoyed by the mipmapped texture shifts. The game itself is still a lot of fun though, I am better now than I was when I first played it for sure. I beat the game the first time using keyboard only because I couldn't get used to the mouse!!!! (NOT JOKING)

I haven't been able to play through JK and MotS since I got Windows XP, stupid random unknown weirdass problems.

As for the mouse thing, I started using mouses actively in gaming around 2000-2001, certainly not around in the 1990s. Even today playing through some of those games with a mouse feels odd. Especially Doom-era games.

Go into your video card driver settings and see if there is a mip-map LOD bias option. Set it all the way in one direction (I forget which one, so experiment) and that should fix the mip-map texture shifts. You can then turn on anisotropic filtering.

You mean in JK, or in the external video card settings from the control panel?

Well I found some nvidia settings applet thing in my display drivers and set everything to max. I think it looks better, I'll let you know when I get to an open area where mipmap transitions are especially jarring. Thanks for the tip.

I used to play JK using the keyboard and a joystick. Man I was odd.

Trigger for fire, thumb button for jump, hat switch for look up/down and strafe left/right, another button for use force, another one for use, and the final two were for next weapon and next force.

...I wonder if JK would install on my new Vista laptop?
Anyone try JK on Vista yet? I'd hate to dig out my disk only to find it won't work.
Still here.
2007-08-19, 2:13 PM #8
JK works fine on Vista, you just have to run it with -windowgui so the GUI runs in windowed mode. The game still works in fullscreen. I would recommended checking the "Disable desktop composition" option in JK.exe's compatibility settings, as this will prevent some flickering when running JK. Normally, it's like Aero turns on and off half a dozen times when you run JK, so if you just disable it all together it's a bit quicker.

JK barely works for me in Vista, at least in fullscreen.

I have to tab out to see the menu, then tab out again when it gets ingame. It gets incredibly annoying.

The music doesn't work for mine. The music was the best part. :(

And the cutscenes have these weird black boxes all over them, in areas where there is solid color and it isn't moving. :(
DO NOT WANT.

I was never able to beat the SP game without cheating, whether using mods or not :(

I can't even seem to beat it as coop in MP either (w/ the SP coop levels that were released semi-recently)... Maw just refuses to die grargh

haha same. Then once I started getting into MP, I forced myself to switch to Mouse/Keyboard.

For a real challenge, try playing through using nothing but the lightsaber. (use the all weapons cheat right at the beginning, but you're *not* allowed to switch weapons (with the exception of, I think there's a couple grates or something that have to be shot from a distance, or if you want to bring down some AT-ST's).
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

This is true for me as well, I'm going to try Emon's suggestion. I will return with a trip report.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Erm, the only way I ever killed ATSTs was with the saber... I never had enough ammo otherwise.

Well, setting all the options in the nvidia control panel didn't seem to make much of a difference, I still see the mipmap thing. I couldn't find a specific setting for mipmap distance, though.
2007-08-19, 8:30 PM #17
You could play Jedi Knight Co-op, Because I think I increased the mipmap distance in the levels for that. Plus, co-op is more fun :awesome:

I started it up again too, with JKE. Zeq, how do I make my gun not bob around like crazy? The game is running at 240 FPS and the gun is making me nauseas.

Is level 17 anyone else's favorite level besides mine?

I used to refuse to play with mice with JK. I think it was once SBX came out that I was like "wow...i really need the mouse".

Same.

For some reason, level 6 sticks out as being my least favorite level. I have the CDs around. Where's the XP fix?

Here's my list of levels ranked favorite to least-favorite (I meant level 18 earlier, not 17):

18, 4, 8, 15, 13, 1, 9, 2, 14, 5, 3, 19, 17, 10, 12, 6, 16, 7, 21, 20, 11.

Bah, level numbers suck, how will I remember? I can't tell you my favorite, but for sure I hate the ship level (just prior to gorc and pic). Also not a big fan of the 2nd level, because it's just long and boring.
2007-08-20, 12:43 AM #26
Level 18 was amazing because it gives you a fantastic feeling of descent — the entire level is vertical.

I love level 4 because of the long tunnels and running water. I thought it was one of the most physically-exciting and aesthetic levels in the game.

Level 8 has many endearing qualities: TIE Bomber runs, windy rooftops, a really cool feeling of infiltration, a good texture set, lots of enemy patrol routes, and a feeling of extreme vertigo.

15 was just amazing. The way they simulated the falling ship was unprecedented in computer game history. I loved exploring the different possible routes.

13 was great because of the amazing outdoor architecture.

1 is great because it's classic.

The rest kind of get bland in my opinion. And you can tell I'm not a fan of the dark jedi fights.

Level 9 is my favorite in terms of architecture. The developers did a great job on the fuel pipes and the area in the beginning with the big red pipe in the middle that you have to adjust the fuel level to be able to open.

Level 18 is the one where you have to ride the cargo thing down to the bottom, right? I always manage to get down to the bottom, yet I'm never sure where to go to finish the map.

i used to play jk with a joystick for quite some time. when i finally got on the zone and starting playing against other players, i got my *** handed to me constantly because i couldn't land shots at the player's feet. i then forced myself to use a mouse, but i had to invert the y-axis to match the way i played with my joystick. ever since then, any game i play has to have an inverted y-axis.

definately. luckily i dont think ive found a single first person shooter that didnt have an inverted y axis option.

i agree that a lot of fan-made levels are multitudes more interesting aesthetically, but in LEC's defense: the game came out 10 years ago, and dedicated 3d GPUs were still a nicety that not everyone had so the same game environments had to be feasible for software rendering.

Meh, it's all pretty on par with the rest of the stuff released around then.
2007-08-20, 6:34 AM #31
everyone knows y-axis should always be inverted. That's why it's JK's default option.

What he said. The gun might still move faster than what it should, so blame the JK developers.

BTW, JK should run just fine on Windows XP. Most of the editors and players I know are running JK on XP without any special tweaking needed. If you are not already doing so, avoid using setup.exe or jedi.exe to start JK; start JK directly with jk.exe.

Brian, you should play MOTS sp. The pirate levels are AWFUL arch wise. As if they just give up :)

I played mots through one time, and I was thoroughly bored the entire time. At the time, I thought the level design was lame (even in comparison to JK). Some of the MP maps were awesome, but I didn't like mp much because of 2 things: the lameness they added to the water and the sniper rifle.
2007-08-20, 2:54 PM #35
I thought MotS's secret level was pretty nifty. Although I'm not sure it should be called an official Easter Egg because it required more than just finding it.

Yeah, MotS MP had amazing levels, but the SP lacked in many places.

However, it should be noted that tweaking will typically be required to run MP. (Well.. Port Forwarding anyway)
