Yeah, me too. Usually only when I first wake up in the morning, or when I put it right against my ear.

It has a very slight whiny buzzing sound when you turn it on.

Just listen to a lot of loud music or get old. The sound will go away.

Yup, it does make a noise.

I have one that's over ten years old, don't even know where it is. But yeah, I can remember hearing that.

It's probably caused by the voltage transformer inside (has to take 1.5 volts to 150 volts)

The sound is actually the brain cells becoming cancerous as you put it towards your ear.

If the room is quiet enough, I can hear it without putting it by my ear.

I can also hear when a television has been left on (at the silent 'blue screen of waitingness') from the next room over... :psyduck:

Since most older adults have lost the ability to hear that frequencies, some places have taken to playing that frequencies to deter teenage miscreants from loitering on the premises.

Yep. I have an alarm clock with indiglo, too. It's bigger than my watch and the sound is much louder.

Somebody in one of my classes was playing the sound (I'm pretty sure the one used to deter teenagers is a higher pitched version than what a CRT TV emits) on his laptop, I guess to see if the prof noticed. It was ear-piercing, I couldn't stand it. I could see that working to deter teenagers, but I think it would cause a lot of lost business (pretty sure some adults can still hear it, too).

Yes! The TV at home has a habit of getting on the AV Input channel with the VCR turned off. The screen is black, but the noise is still there!

Some teenagers have supposedly used that sound as a ringtone so they can hear their phone go off in class without pissing off the teacher.

I haven't noticed. I only use it before 6:00am, and I'm outside jogging when it's on.

The problem with that is most cellphones have incredibly crappy speakers for ringers, so they can't play the tone at the proper frequency, which makes it easier to hear.

I hate the mosquito ringtone, especially when people turn it on during class. It's weird though, I have an old teacher that can hear it.

This is what is sounds like.

This is bogus for several reasons.

1. It's from an episode of CSI or something.
2. Cell phone speakers can't emit that kind of high frequency.
3. Adults CAN hear those frequencies, just not as well.

Wow, that's incredibly annoying.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
