Do you guys have grouchy people at your library that complain about your page flipping?

Well, I do. I was sitting in one of those cubicles they have in my library and my page flipping was too loud. I was researching people for a summer assignment. Next thing I know, a grouchy lady comes over and starts ranting at the loudness of my page flipping. I was just flipping my pages casually and it made the normal flip sound. Suddenly, security comes and asks me why I'm disturbing the lady. I say "That's complete BS (actually just said Bee Es) sir. I was just flipping the pages casually." I casually went show him how I flipped the page and then he tells me I'm being a smart *** and that I shouldn't cuss (from saying BS).

Well, then I tell him he's being a hypocrite and immediately gets mad at me for using a word he didn't know (I just guessed he didn't know what it meant. He told me "HOW DARE YOU CALL ME THAT BAD THING") and then tells me to leave the library.

Some head librarian then comes and the security guard and grouchy lady tell the story (and not giving me a chance to). The librarian tells me to apologize and I do so sarcastically but apparently they didn't care. Then I went back to studying.

Are your libraries like this?

you should get a lap top and find that lady again and start typing really loud right next to her. :suicide:

Well, most people usually don't have a problem with me or anyone else flipping my pages loud and I try not to be obnoxious and disturbing at the library. Even the homeless dudes don't complain. I just thought it was really weird that she had complained for something stupid like that. Next time I'll just bring my awesome headphones and crank up the music loud enough that I can't hear her while she rants. They really don't leak that much noise when I make my Ipod on maximum volume.

Warlockmish, this isn't an attack so don't take it that way.

We've all been someplace where something inoccuous was very disturbing to somebody else. Think somebody cracking their knuckles. I think most of us have heard that annoying loud page flipping at one time or another. I don't know if yours was that bad but somebody's perception was that it was. You could have just said to the lady, "Sorry, I really didn't notice that I was making so much noise" and then have been a little more conscience of it. If necessary you could have said similar to security (in the obviously ghetto library you were in :p).

Well the thing is, I have tried apologizing to people in past experiences such as that. I realized that grouchy people will still be grouchy no matter what. Even if I did say that, they would be like "Yeah you BETTER be sorry you know kid? Your loud noises made me mad!" and they would go on for a few minutes lecturing me, teaching me a "lesson" which I personally wouldn't care about. I really don't want to take my time to hear them out because it is all the same thing. Still, my flipping of my pages wasn't even loud at all and no I was not listening to music at that time. Just think of it as this, the loudness of my page flipping was as loud as turning a piece of paper to the other side. I just didn't want to waste my time carefully turning the pages of the huge 17x20 encyclopedia. I do respect all the people at the library and I try not to make loud noises.

You should have given the casual apology like Wookie06 suggested and if the woman had kept lecturing, you could have gone to the security guard yourself and told him the lady keeps disturbing your studying with her irrelevant talking in a library that should be a no-talk place.

Articles like this reminds me that either Americans or people on the internet use words that I tend to never hear, like cuss and obnoxious. :P
nope.

Your breathing is TOO LOUD!
STOP BREATHING AND APOLOGIZE!

Er, no. Our libraries aren't that bad.

I'm usually the one who gets annoyed by obnoxious little things... like the lady next to me in the library one time who broke out into some sort of Indian spiritual song after blasting her music through her headphones so everyone on my floor could hear it.

That's pretty ridiculous. I try to type as quietly as I can when I'm in the library at school, and nobody has ever said anything to me (typing is louder than page flipping, in my book).

At my school's library there are four floors, 2 and 4 are "quiet study" floors, the others aren't. You still have to treat 1 and 3 as a library, but study groups and stuff like that are free to talk quietly, whereas on 2 and 4 you generally have to keep, well, as quiet as possible. I think that's a pretty good setup.

And it encapsulates horrible behaviors.

Where do you go? I think that's the best setup. We have that at BU in theory, but no one enforces it, so you'd look like an *** trying to ask people to follow it.

Heh, I learned to type on a typewriter, so I type EXTREMELY LOUD and bang the keys, especially when I'm writing diatribes. :v:

That's quite interesting behavior (not unexpected, though), I'd be shocked to face something like that, but not as shocked as realizing that I'm in a library for some reason.
