Saw this a few weeks ago on another forum.
I have no opinion on the matter but here's a response from a girl on the board who's from china:
Quote:
Though I've not seen this news from China's media, I'm sure it is true.

My opinions are:

1) I don't think this is ridiculous, neither is wrong. Its main purpose is get an legal edge over "competitors" in case today's 72-year-old Dalai dies.

2) Today's 72-year-old Dalai now lives outside China. China now faces a problem: China is the legal place to get a new one when Dalai dies, but doesnt keep the legal "lineage". If Dalai died, not only China would try to get a new one, but also someone outside China would get someone else too. So the purpose to make this law is to have a legal advantage in the possible "competition" of successors.

3)"The tighter China squeezes, the more slips through her fingers, like sand on the beach.. " This is not suitable in this case. It's fit for the situation of media control.

And The original artice which that quote was a response to.

China is the legal place to get a new one? According to China maybe, but not the Dalai Lama. In fact, the current Dalai has stated he might not reincarnate at all (imagine that...). China's already tried to choose the Panchen Lama, and the Dalai denied the validity. Though, I don't know how much it matters, I bet a government picked Lama would be more in favor of the current government and not in favor of the traditional caste society created on the backs of slaves...I mean paradise.

Buddhists don't believe in reincarnation.

No, I think Qin's terracotta army will kill any souls that try to reincarnate in China if they don't get permission.

yeah... how could they possibly enforce that?

What it comes down to is that if someone later claims to be the Dalai Lama reincarnate, China can be like "Hey, you didn't go through the proper legal procedure in your past life. ARREST." Thereby, having control over the Buddhists. It's pretty much an excuse for religious tyranny.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Absolutely ridiculous. But it would make a pretty cool comic book. China picks their own Dalai in line with their totalitarian government, the real Dalai emerges elsewhere in the world.. then they kung fu fight in space. It'd be awesome.

I think the Lama should be reincarnated as a vengeful bird and spread avian flu all over the country as revenge. :argh:

Oh wait, I guess that wouldn't be very Buddhist. :(

No it's an excuse for just tyranny in general.

But don't worry, when we go to war with China, the Dalai Lama, will kick back and relax and not have to worry.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Dude I don't want to go to war with China.

Do you realize how many rounds I would have to carry to last for even one engagement? Theres so many of those ****ers that their military would be huge!

No man, I'm going to spend my time in Iraq getting chewed out for teaching Iraqi kids to sing "Give Peace a Chance". None of this China ****. Unless it's like Red Dawn. That could be badass.

SOOO off topic, anyway.

This is BS. Thats like if the Canadaland required the reincarnation of Jep to be from the Canadaland. That would just throw everything off.
