clothes for christmas......why?
2003-12-25, 6:20 PM #1
Alright, I hate getting clothes for Christmas. Not because I dont appreciate the time someone spent to pick them out for me, or even calling my parents to ask them which size they think I wear (I've gone from a 32, which I've been for 5 years, to a 29, and I dont know why....) but because the clothes you get for Christmas are always from the places you dont want to wear, often featuring idiotic fake places, sports teams, or anything with a sexual reference. Yes, I'm referring to Old Navy, Abercrombie, American Eagle, and to some degree Gap, although Gap doesnt usually print stupid crap on their shirts.

I remember in high school there were basically two types of dress. The "punk" kids who wore cut up clothes and band shirts and a bunch of funky little trinkets that they flock to Hot Topic to get, or the "prep" kids who can typically be discerned by the way that their clothing just screams A&F catalog. You couldnt go any other way without automatically being labelled "gay" by either group. I started my senior year of high school, and I was ****ed with to an extent, but not too bad.

I'm sorry I care about what I look like and dress myself in clothes that really fit me and look good on me. I dont care if my clothes are too tight or to drab in color or too bright or too expensive, buy less, dress better. I wear what I want and usually it means spending the extra money to go for the designer brands. Please dont give me an Old Navy sweater or an Abercrombie hoodie. No matter how good you think your kids look in it and all their friends, I just dont want it. Give me the $30 dollars you spent on it and I'll use some of my own money too to buy a new shirt.

Sorry, I just wanted to vent about all the returns I have to do. It's funny because when my relatives called my mom to see what size I wore if they were buying me clothing she just told them that they'd be better off just getting me one of those VISA or Amex gift cards.

I dont really expect too many replies to this, but I just wanted to vent.

I understand about getting the brand name stuff.
My school was like that too.
However, in college, the two types are changed to those who take time to choose somthing to wear and those who wera pajamas to everywhere but work.

I found getting some old navy stuff this year very help full as it alowed me to put off doing laundary for another week. Maby two. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I asked for clothes last year and took back a majority of them. This year I said if they wanted to give me clothes just to give me the money so I can pick out what I'm actually going to wear.

At my college there's 3 types of people. The pajama group, which you normally dont see because it means they're too lazy to go to class. The Abercrombie group, yes engineers have no fashion sense. And then there's people similar to me, but we're a minority.

I just don't wear anything with a big foolish logo. I won't pay someone for them to let me advertise for them. It just doesn't make sense.

I wear clean clothes in colors appropriate for whatever media I'm working with... like I won't wear white if I'm going to be doing a load of charcoal drawings or something. Otherwise I seem to wear black jeans and t-shirts.

If someone knows that's what I wear and found something appropriate and wants to give it to me, power to them.

i live in the deep south, and go to a huge school.

no one cares what you whare there, so i mix my clothing. one day it's 'prep' the next it's baggy black jeans and black t-shirts. occasionally i dress up for no apparent reason, but really i just like to make people woner.

it's really shalo to decide if you want to hang out with a person based on what thay choose to buy in a clothing store.

south carolina, it has more to do with the size of the school, 2,600 people.

I go to a prep school, so we aren't really allowed to wear anything with big logos. I basically dress preppy(because of stupid dress code), but I do it without ever buying the 'prep brands'(A&F, American Eagle, Old Navy...) I just buy from consignment shops.
sigs are fun stuff

Old Navy should not be put in the same catergory as Abercrombie.

Abercrombia and Hollister and all that junk..they are just arrogant.

The only time I get clothes for Christmas is when I tell my mom and dad that I want something. Then, they tell to go out and get it in the size and color I want. That's never a problem. Did that last year with a leather jacket.

So sad, GBK, so sad. ;]

I too go to a prep school and wear 'Puritan' shirts so that I might feel and act more puritanical. :S I almost always wear ironed white shirts, and sometimes flannel if there is absolutely nothing else. I occasionally wear suits to turn a few heads and get a few compliments. I feel more comfortable and in my element in a suit, anyway.

I agree that it's senseless to pay a company to advertise for them.

I wear what ever the hell I want. If my mom tries to buy me something while out shopping, I pretty much just tell her "Go ahead. I won't wear it though. Now those shirts over there I will wear....". That bugs her to high hell. I don't care if it's Old Navy, Target, Wal-Mart, or whatever as long as I like it.

I'm also in a bit of a dilemma. I ususally wear big shirts, but I realized I look really......stupid. Now, I don't care what other people think, but I don't like the way I look. On the other hand, I got a normal sized shirt(a little tight but not uncomfortably so) and I like it, but if I put that with my iron cross necklace, I look gay. But I can use that to my advantage. *rubs hands together*

btw, I'm not sure if people realize this, but Abercrombie no longer sells clothes. They've gone to soft porn.

I agree with you in general Schming. Especially the bit about just give me money and let me buy stuff [like groceries [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]]

I don't really put huge stock in what i wear or how i appear, so long as i'm clean and presentable, i don't go out of my way to look attractive or classy or whatever. I always tell people that if i really wanted to attract a mate i'd paint my arse bright blue.

I am a very big fan of salvation army, goodwill, savers.. and lost and found bins.. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] Actually the vast majority of what i wear is from Savers [heart]. But i also appreciate the fact that for me to buy second or third hand clothings, someone has to buy it new first, so i'm not /hugely/ down on people buying wal-mart clothes or whatever [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

In my opinion though things like Abercrombie and Fitch, or American Eagle [and subsidiaries like Hot Topic, though there they at least have /some/ pretty damn cool stuff and employees, my best friend used to work there for one], or the Gap or whatever, is just kinda absurd. Like i could either buy a shirt.. or groceries for a month.. hmmmm.

I went into Old Navy once actually.. because i was feeling bored and evil.. and proceeded to inquire if they had cargo-skirts and where i might find them; after a bit they suggested i try the GQ Outlet, and then i left..

whenever i have a conversation about clothes i always feel like such a jerk for liking Old Navy. I love sweaters and the like and they have nice clothes and pretty good sales sometimes, though I have a general rule not to buy anything that's not on sale exept in some cases. I'm not generally a big AE fan...at all, though they have a sweater that I want.

basically though, I couldn't care less where I buy clothes (though obviously some stores cater to my taste and in some stores you get what you pay for) as long as I like it. I'd rather get something from Hech's than express because Express is so expensive it's unholy and I can get more for my money, of which i don't have much.

uhh...after that little rant...my family generally has a pretty good idea of what I like, and if they don't, they generally don't get me clothes.

Ya, Express is awesome when they have sales. I got a brown hobo hoodie (meaning all slashed up and cool looking) for $8 when it was originally $50. I rarely buy things from there when there's not a sale.

I agree with Schming. Last Christmas, and I think the Christmas before that, I got a bunch of adidas and GAP clothes, even though I've repeatedly said I don't wear that type of stuff. My mom tried to take me into a GAP when we were buying clothes for me, and I refused to go in. Somehow she didn't get the message.
This Christmas I received two sweaters, which are okay, but I don't wear sweaters often. I've been known to go outside for long periods of time in 8°C weather wearing a t-shirt.

I usually don't even buy things at Savers unless that tag colour is half off that day.. i take a certain unholy pride in never having spent more than 5$ on an item of clothing there [and given that probably 90% of what i wear is from there, and the other 10% was given me or has just circulated around friends or whatever]..

Schming, you're being a bit picky.

If it looks good on you, is socially acceptable, and is comfortable, then what's the problem?

Hell, I wear Old Navy pants. I hate their commercials like crazy, but they just make nice pants.

What's the problem with that?

Also, GBK is 100% right. Clothes are a lot better than nothing. If they're nice clothes they're just as good as any other medium sized gift, and you have the joy of actually using it.

I don't see why anyone makes fun of GBK anyway.

The jeans are cut differently and have different methods of coloration, which is why they're generally more expensive, or overpriced. But I used to buy the $20 jeans from random stores too but then I found that the more expensive jeans fit nicer, look better, and are more comfortable. I dont think I'll ever go back, unless there's a nuclear war or a huge economic slump.
