Leasing a vehicle is the dumbest thing anyone can do. Only possible exception is when it is a business expense. Then it's only a really dumb thing to do. To answer your question look for a used Miata. You'll save $30,000.

Leasing a NEW car is retarded. There's nothing wrong with leasing a used car.

I don't feel like hearing any of this "But you're paying more for nothing!" rhetoric, because you're getting something. You're paying for not having to come up with the cash up front.

Find a new used car. Used cars are great.

Paying cash is the best way to buy a car but almost everybody finances vehicles so buying a used car doesn't have anything to do with putting cash up front. Most people just want vehicles they can't afford so they piss away monthly lease payments rather than buy a car they can afford.

Exactly. You can't afford a BMW so you'll borrow one for how long and how much money? You're trying to spend money like you have it but you don't. If you have a paid off car then save the money. If your car isn't paid off, pay it off. Or go out and finance a great car for less than half the $36K. My car was half that and costs me about $350 a month with nothing down. It was used so it's still worth very close to what I paid for it.

i can afford 300-400 / mo lease payments, and if it means i can swap new vehicles every 3 years or so then what is there to gripe about

edit:
which is how much sky is if i put about 5.6k down

How much do you put into long term and short term investments each month and are you debt free with a paid off house? You should never look at vehicles based on how much you can afford per month.

edit - I'm not really trying to derail your thread here. I encourage others to help you pick out your car. I'm just going to continue to try to talk you out of making a financial mistake! :)

Uh...yeah. You should be walking or riding a bike to work at 0.9 miles. There is absolutely no reason to buy a car like that. This is going to sound cliche, but you're young and naive and would be wasting your money.

Yeah, I would consider biking to work, unless you have a ton of stuff to carry or its really cold or dangerous. Some of us would be happy to have an occupation that's just .9 miles away.

Plus, extra exercise.

Work isn't the only reason one usually needs transportation. How far away is the grocery store? His buddies? His family? His martial arts classes? What if he wants to go camping?

Telling someone to walk or ride a bike just because they live a mile away from work is to make a lot of assumptions... and probably involves a lot of hypocrisy as well.

Personally, I wouldn't drive a BMW to any of those things.

Only place that I would personally drive a BMW is to bring a girl that I wanted to **** in the *** home from a sleazy club so that it would seem like I was rich.

Going to the grocery store, my friends, visiting famile, going camping, carrying equipment for anything I do, it's going to be a truck or a crappy sedan. But that's because I am still 19. My friends are spending all of their money on nice trucks and ****, that they won't even ever own, and they're going to be out of ****ing money when they get older.

When I get older, I will have paid for school already, saved up a lot of money, and have a steady income. Then I can buy expensive cars to pick up loose girls at sleazy clubs. I'll still get a cheap car to carry stuff around in though. But when you're young I guess you think you have a lot of money and have to "live while you can" which is the most hilarious idea when it comes to stuff like cars.

As for leasing, cars are ****ty investments anyway. If you drive them, they will ALWAYS deteriorate, they can't really build value if you actually use them, so it's not like you're throwing money away leasing a car like you are paying rent on an apartment or something.

Oh god I'm not making any sense again, I must have not slept last night!

EDIT:So in closing, I don't think you need a BMW but you might. I guess I don't remember how old you are, so my little shpiel above may have nothing to do with you (and it's of questionable validity anyway!) but really man, unless you have a real good reason not to, ride a bike to work and stick with your old one. Save the money or buy me breast implants. I mean a new keybaord. :tinfoil:

im 21,

have college loans, which total to about 500/mo
dont own any credit cards, have nothing financed and no debts other than college loans.
my vehicle is fully paid for, but starting to come closer to the light.
no house, just renting a super cheap apt (545/mo).

from the 7 months of employment i can project that after all expenses (including those unforeseen or recreational) i accrue 20% of pre-tax income as credit, equating to ~9k/yr after taxes, or if you divide it out: 750/mo hard cash

plus ill drop this dedicated server im not using for anything so add another 70/mo :P

also, i dont know if their web form was bugged but supposedly my usaa auto insurance premium will not change if i swap my vehicle for a roadster.. hmm

StrikeAthius, ultimately you will do exactly what you want. I just urge you to reconsider because it doesn't make financial sense to do so. It sounds like you are on the way to a good future. Invest in that and in a few years pay cash for a car because you can.

A lot of people do replace their cars every time the newest model comes out. This leaves a lot of used cars that are in near perfect condition for a lot less money. That would be my goal for a nice newish car. It seems a lot smarter to me. Good luck with your purchase.

yeah I made the mistake of leasing my car before i took a financial class... i regret it now but theres no point in getting out of it i will just owe more (way over miles)... I planned on keeping it anyways. I love this car.

You should get one of either of these. They'll mean you have a bigger penis.

2007 Triumph Thruxton $7,990

Ducati Sport 1000 $12,000

They both cost less. They look cooler. They get better mileage.

And they aren't as financially retarded as leasing a sports car you can't really afford.

Uhhh.

Cafe Racers were built to go around corners. Thats where their roots are.

I would agree that the early 60's and 70's cafe racers were pretty clumbsy but they still corner better.

Isn't the entire reason you buy a sports car because you have no friends, want poon, or have a little dingy?
