Firefox busted?
2007-09-06, 5:01 AM #1
So suddenly for some inexplicable reason Firefox has decided it can't get to god knows how many websites (Kotaku and Wikipedia the big ones I've noticed thus far). I click a link or tell it to go there and it spins is wheels and does jack all. This despite the fact the IE and Safari have no problem at all. It worked fine last night, so wtf is it doing?

I've been reading wiki articles all night on firefox, so I'm not entirely sure it's some "global firefox" problem and not just some "your firefox" problem.

It's not a firefox problem. I'm in class now and everything works. Which means it's something with the DSL at home. Lovely.

I assume you tried restarting firefox? Oftentimes this happens because Firefox keeps its own DNS cache.

Hmmm, I just realized my comment was more of a "no ****, sherlock" comment. Hopefully Matty's post helps when you get back.

You may want to start it with "firefox -profilemanager", create a new profile and see how it works then. If it's fine, your profile is messed up somehow. If it's still bad, try reinstalling.

Restarted firefox, restarted computer, dumped firefox's cache.

None of that helped at home. But like I said, it's working here at school, which says to me the problem lies somewhere else (likely with my DSL modem, rebooting it'll probably help) and not with firefox any more.

If IE and Safari work fine, it's not your DSL. Create a new profile in Firefox and see if it works. See Vegiemaster's post again.

Point taken. But why would it then work flawlessly here in class?

Because you are on a different computer at home, right? Or are you using a laptop and taking it to class?

.... yeah.... I shoulda mentioned that loooooong ago.

Let's start over.

Last night on my laptop, firefox works fine.
This morning on my laptop, I can't get to (notably) wikipedia and kotaku. It just sits there and does nothing. No error messages. IE and Safari had no problem going there.
I pack up and head to school, sign my laptop into the network, and firefox is working as per the norm.

Let's hope that clears up alot of the confusion going back and forth.

So.... ideas? Again? I can't check anything out though until later tonight. Knowing my luck everything'll probably work fine when I get home.

Well, no. I don't exactly like problems that crop up and then vanish for seemingly no reason though.

Did you try this?

Do this or use the "Safe mode" shortcut. Both have similar effects. If Firefox starts behaving, you have a rogue extension (possibly plugin or theme, but extension is more likely). Restart Firefox as normal, and disable extensions and restart Firefox until it works. Once you've identified the single extension you disable to get everything working, chuck it and find a better one. Or make sure the settings in it aren't wonky.

For specifics... Fasterfox makes changes that your ISP might not like (try resetting to Firefox defaults? disabling Fasterfox won't turn the effects off). Greasemonkey scripts could theoretically be prolonging page load times if you have a sucky one. Stylish scripts too but that's less likely unless you have an image heavy one that applies to every page or something.
