why do people complain about monthly fees for mmorpgs

The game should be free to acquire, but monthly fees don't bother me. I understand the costs of staff/gms/etc and servers; but if I'm going to shell out $10-15 a month the game should be free to begin with (downloadable client).

No, because almost everyone that plays MMOs is a holier-than-thou, anti-government, hypocritical **** that would refuse to play it solely because it has advertising in it.

:D
nope.

But its free... seriously though, you think that food companies, car companies and what not would help maintain a game server if the server had their advertisements in game? Sounds like a plan to me.
Nothing to see here, move along.

You completely missed my point.

i think if they are going to charge a monthly fee, you shouldnt have to spend 10 months worth of funds just to buy the game if you cant play it.

Possible, yes. But what they will do (and sometimes already do), is add advertisements and still charge you.
Sorry for the lousy German

I have never played an mmorpg. The "drawback" to having a <2 year old son and a hot latina wife.

In general, I would think that one of these games should cost no more than $20, less as the monthly fee goes up. The thing is that any upstart game would be taking a huge risk. If World of Warcraft was a free download and only a handful of people signed up to be paying subscribers Blizzard would go under. Maybe charge people more initially and if the product becomes successful enough the price can drop, hopefully to free, and then credit early adopters towards there monthly fees.

Advertising in games is getting to be a necessity anyway. Developers need to look for increased revenue. As long as advertising is context appropriate, it actually aids realism. I've recently been playing Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The Axe body spray was funny, and a little too obvious. But I really got a kick out of seeing it in the game, mostly because of the humorous ads on TV. I just love the The Bom Chicka Wah Wah's.

While I agree that Guild Wars can get boring at times, the fact it has no fee means if you get bored, take a break and come back when you're in the mood to play it again, just like another game you might own. I don't agree that the gameplay is bad because the game's skill system is pretty good and makes pvp fun because you just never know what kind of player builds you'll be up against.

Anyway, Guild Wars: Eye of the North is going to be the last release for the original Guild Wars. Arena.net is not working on a sequel that will be closer to a true MMORPG (guild wars is technically not a mmorpg, fyi) by creating a more persistant game world ala like most MMORPGs. Guild Wars 2 will also be subscription fee free as well. I'm looking forward to the sequel and hope it doesn't turn out to be another WoW clone like some people think it'll be.

I agree with everyone you say. Needless to say, I quite bored with Guild Wars for awhile until Eye of the North came out.

Sony Online is recently looking into alternatives like this to make their next MMO stealth agent game, The Agency, free in terms of online gameplay.
