technically, this is a thread about being sick of it, not a thread about IT directly.

Heh, I had to take a class on ethics and legalities for graphics tech education last year so I was forced to hear a lot of copyright mumble jumbo.

But it still is.

And according to your first post I think you need to go. You know.

To be honest, I think I break at least one copyright daily... :psyduck:

Thank congress for their spectacular patent legislation. I think the patent office is finally starting some much needed reforms that should cut down on stuff like this.

I'm still not sure on how some of the music laws work... Like, I have CDs, that I want to have MP3s of... I really dont need to pay money for ripping software to get copies of the songs i already have... so... am i not allowed to download them?

I think any music should be streamable, just like the radio, except you pick what you want. If i couldn't listen to music before buying it, i sure as hell wouldnt buy it because 'the band is good'.... any good band can make a crappy record.

Well legally you're entitled to download Nintendo roms if you own the game... so in theory you should be able to download the song from your music CD in .mp3 format...

But you do release that Windows Media player rips it's songs as .mp3s right?

Have you ever considered typing FREE and CD RIPPING SOFTWARE into Google might get you something? Besides the fact that WMP does it just fine...FOR FREE.

Exactly. You can't just pirate Virtual Studio just because you own any programs you may write.

It's the ripping function itself you pay for when you buy that software, not the MP3s.

Though honestly, why you wouldn't just go with CDex is beyond me.
2007-09-10, 1:02 PM #18
Um do I have a special version of WMP that allows me to rip to .mp3s or are you guys just not using it... I mean the ripping software comes with Windows... what's the point trying to find a 3rd party one... :psyduck:
2007-09-10, 1:06 PM #19
As far as ripping goes, I'm partial to CDex (windows) and Grip (Ubuntu).

WMP has that nasty bloated feel to it, I've always hated using it.
2007-09-10, 1:12 PM #20
Just to clarify... I have plenty of ripping software for all sorts of media, that was a general example.

No you aren't, it's not fair use. (Since there's no fair use statutes and legislation keeps getting blocked)

You aren't the only one.

All that **** doesn't even matter. It's just a bunch of bull**** ways the pervailing society decided to handle relations between artificial entities. It doesn't mean it's the right way, there are so many better ways. Plus, we shouldn't be devoting so much time to a social system that is ENGINEERED by PEOPLE. That's so stupid! If it's broken, then fix it! If it's not broken, then STFU already!!!

You are NOT legally allowed to download roms for any game, even if you own it.

All "roms" must be copied from the actual hardware you own. Of course, this is beside the point, because DISTRIBUTING roms in the first place is 100% illegal.

So, are they going to dig through an ungodly amount of code on your copy to prove that you illegally acquired it and manage to win a court case with that?

My general feelings in that area are that they don't give a damn enough to bother. Handheld games aren't mp3s and as far as I know the RIAA isn't eyeballing them.

It's illegal, but you make it sound like the FBI is going to break down the door and arrest you before the download is even finished which I find to be a highly improbable situation.

no.

besides, cm is only partly correct. you're allowed to make backup copies of your own software, but copyright law says nothing about firmware. a cartridge sits in the fair use backup legal gray area between being hardware and software and winning the case would be gambling on the mood of the judge.

Edit: Also, copyright infringement is a civil matter so if the fbi broke down your door they're probably not doing it because you are too cheap to buy games on vc.

I didn't say anything about enforcement, but it's still illegal. Just because you can go into a store and steal a movie doesn't make it legal.

Never said they would.

How was I only partly correct?

If you want a backup, you have to use your own hardware (cartridge, system, backup utility). You can't just download the image.

And I don't know what you mean or even talk about as far as firmware goes. Firmware (for many devices, not just games. Just look at wifi on linux that requires firmware) has to be ripped from your device also (illegal to distribute, illegal to download, legal to backup/rip).

OKAY... i should have seen this coming, its turning into the *** damn court cases in here. I'm here to ***** about the news not having anything better to cover... not as much about the copyrights.
