Recommend me a laptop
2007-09-12, 5:39 PM #1
So I've got about $1000 to burn on a new laptop for school, but I can honestly say I haven't kept up much on them so I don't know which to go with. I'm more interested in what brands are good then anything else, but if you have a particular model that I should check out, you can feel free to let me know.

Oh, and one other thing. I don't want a Macbook. For those of you who love Macbooks and thing they are the greatest thing ever, thats awesome for you. I still don't want one.

So, what should I go for?

Macbook tri-boot OSX, Vista and Ubuntu

I wouldn't recommend tri-booting osx, vista and ubutnu. Might be a bit unstable. Osx and xp or ubuntu would be a good combo IMHO. Defiantly go with a macbook though.
Take that there and put it in here

There's 0 reason for a system to be unstable for running 3 OSes.

I know. I just hate vista. But It would be easy to accidentally delete or modify something and screw your pc over though.

How did I know all of the first posts would be about the Macbook? :P

At which point you delete the partition, who cares.

Before making a suggestion, can I ask why you're not wanting a macbook?
nope.

Lenovo's ThinkPads are excellent.

I like my Thinkpad T61p so far. You have to pay a bit extra to get a decent warranty, though.

Because I don't want a Mac. I don't want to deal with OSX, and I'm definately not going to bother with dual-booting the system or formating it and reinstalling just so I don't have to use it.

Quit being an idiot and get a macbook. It's the best PC for the price, and you can install anything else you want. You should be looking at specs--the OS it comes with is almost definitely going to have to be installed over anyways just so you don't have to deal with a billion popups and a bunch of stupidity. Why not get a great laptop that you can also use OSX on as a benefit.

Anyone who says they "don't want a macbook" usually hasn't even researched them in the slightest.

Except, you know what? I don't care and still don't want a macbook, no matter what you may think you know about what I have and have not researched. I don't want OSX, I don't see it as any great benefit, and I'm not going to deal with installing a new OS which, by the way, I don't have the software for, just so I can run all the programs I own which don't run on a mac. So, yet again, let me emphasize, I am not getting a macbook. If you can't deal with that, then don't bother replying, because I don't care how good you think a macbook is.

If you can deal with the pre-installed crap on a laptop, with inferior hardware for the same price and then some, then feel free.

Consider this another vote for Lenovo Thinkpads. At this point I might as well be a walking infomercial, I have convinced nearly all my friends and family to go with Thinkpads. Not to mention that my G41 is going on 4 years old, has been to hell and back with me, and still works like a charm.

Another Thinkpad-lover here. My R60 UE1HTGE is awesome, I've got 5 hours battery life. I don't know how expensive that model is in America, but considering, that many stores just translate $ to € 1:1 it could be in your pricerange.
Sorry for the lousy German

well, I know you hate macbooks....so did I, but when looking at the spec's you get for the price, the size and weight of the laptop, you can't beat it.

If you can't be arsed to install windows on it...well, I hope you love dealing with all the pre-installed crap that will come on all the other laptops you get.

Just go buy yourself a copy of windows, at least that way you get a proper windows cd and not some manufacturer modified piece of crap.

But hey, you hate mac's...so...

samsung? they make semi-decent laptops that don't seem to have too much crap pre-installed from what I've seen.

From all these macbook enthusiastic suggestions I get the impression that if you get a macbook, the OSX comes with it free of charge, or what? You wouldn't be suggesting it otherwise to a person who doesn't want to touch that particular OS. So, can't you get an OEM Vista with the thing as well if you ask for it when you buy it? If the OSX doesn't affect the total price at all, then getting a Windows would raise the price to the level you could expect from any laptop of that quality level (from what I've heard, the technical quality of macbooks is quite good).

Macbooks are the daddy. Pound for pound they're one of the best deals on the market.

A. Macbooks aren't cheaper. (Even after student discount)
B. Macs come with a lot of crap too, and Lenovos aren't too bad at all.
C. You can at least accept the fact and stop breathing down his neck for his choice.

The only crap Macs come pre-loaded with are Quicken and Office trials. Its recommended one do a clean install anyway when they get their Mac, I removed language files I didn't need and drivers I would never use and it saved me 7-10GB.

Might not be the best brand, but its a good bang for the buck. I'm considering it for College, work travels, and car tuning.

Considering a Mac is still a PERSONAL COMPUTER, it makes perfect sense.

They don't even have a Quicken trial anymore. And if you want to remove the Office trial, you drag the folder into the trash. Done.

Guess I'll have to check out Lenovo. And I did actually look at Macbook pricing. The base model itself is $1100, and that comes with only 1 gig of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive. So in order to get 2 gigs of RAM and a larger hard drive, I'm going to have to spend well over $1300 at least. Way more then the $1000 I was saying.

Didn't know that - it was on my MacPro that I bought in June. =\

Miss mine? No name brand, but $850, 1gb ram, 100gb hd, decent vid card, decent processor, good size screen as well... and $150 left over for partying!
