What if I were to wipe all sensitive information out of the entire massassi (not forums) database (like, all passwords and email addresses), and then release the entire massassi (not forums) as open source? That way, if anything with CM ever happened, there will be tons of people out there with all the stuff. This includes the entire db, all the files, all the tutorials, etc. Clearly I can't assign copyright of stuff that people have submitted over the years, but everyone gave me permission to redistribute so it seems kosher.

Since it's open, it also means anyone is free to do with it what they want.

There is a risk to massassi in that the scripts that run the site are OLD and they are probably full of security holes...

Feedback?

Works for me.

I'm not sure most people would do anything productive or positive with it. Just burn it all to a couple of dvds, send a copy in the mail to a couple of the other admins maybe.

By the way, thanks for running massassi over the years, and thanks for un-permabanning me in 2003 :)

I'm with GHORG. Just make a backup of all files and what not and ship them to CM for his safekeeping. It would be a pain in the *** to get all the files from everybody in a timely manner. Having a backup store in a central location allows for quick and (hopefully) easy restoration process.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I offered to host anything that is needed for backup or mirrors. I have over a terrabyte of space on my server thats barely been touched.

I already have a backup of the entire Massassi webserver, so unless there's something else that Brian's got locally, I've already got it all.

But that's not what Brian's talking about. He's saying if I were to suddenly keel over, would anyone else want to hold on to it?

My point of view: Don't put the source up for download, but give it to individual members who request it. I'd even be willing to handle this. I'd rather we don't have to worry about some kid with too much time on his hands exploiting some overlooked 6 year old bug :/

Oh, so you mean like someone to take care of this place if you disappered?

Yeah i wouldn't post up source, but if you dont get at least a few volunteered 'heirs' to the throne, i will be glad to lend a hand. if need be.

Security holes are a concern of mine, as well. Release source files to certain people, privately.

I would like to have the source files, if for no other reason than to have them as backup. (I bug people all the time in #jkhub about sending out backup copies of their projects.)

We should do it Lord of the Rings style.

3 copies of #massassi go to the elves (admins)

5 to the dwarves (facist).

and 9 to the humans (communist).

(Whatever the numbers are)

I thought you were just being a smart*** referring to "Snow White and the seven dwarves" bit.

If you do distribute it, you can always do so with a torrent.

I think it's a good idea. Can't say anything about security though...
