Need a Hard Drive

Hard disk in my desktop is failing. It started to get really loud a while ago, and seek times have gotten ridiculously long, and Maxtor's diagnostic tool on the Ultimate Boot CD confirms imminent failure. It's a Maxtor drive, bought about three years ago when I bought the computer.

So, question to all who know about these things, Seagate Barracuda or WD Caviar?

I prefer the longer warranty on the Seagate, but WD is rated better. Not too concerned about the size difference. Old drive was 160GB and was plenty.

Thanks.

Edit - Also, I need ideas with what to do with the old drive. It seems a shame to trash it, but I don't dare trust it with any of my data. Hard Drive Clock maybe?

Do you need SATA? If not, welll..... :)

Edit: If it's 3 years old, are you sure it's a SATA drive?

I've had good luck with Seagate drives.

WD.

My personal preference as of late has been Seagate. You can't really beat the warranty. 10 dollars for 70 more gigs and the warranty definitely seems like the right call here.

Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, Samsung, they're all fine.

Consider spending a little more to go 400 or 500 GB.

Yeah, I'm sure it's a SATA. Doesn't have to be though, I have an IDE channel open (master and slave). My motherboard was one of the first to come with a SATA connector (only 1!), and it treats a SATA drive as master on IDE0. Optical Drives take up IDE1. I like the FRY's deal. Thanks Jlee.

Ah. Well, I prefer SATA due to the smaller cable, faster drive, etc...but if you're open to IDE, that's not a really bad deal. Every so often Outpost has them cheap, though - I think a few weeks back they had that drive for ~$70 shipped.

Woot. Thanks for the link, JLee. I just bought that for my older desktop. I'm running out of place to store my Anime.
