I was born in Japan. Too bad I don't remember anything.

MAN! Everyone I know seems to be going to japan. My cousin is currently spending 2 years there, two of my friends are spending a semester there and 2 or 3 of my other friends just went there last year. And my freshman year roommate went there too. Is there a memo I'm missing?
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Japan is the latest culture fad.

It will likely be followed by something else in the next decade. I'm predicting a mexico/spain fad.

Why Mexico? Hepatitis is going to be a fad?

Japan is a relatively popular destination because it seems like it'd be an interesting place to go where you wouldn't catch something that funky from drinking the water. It's more 'exotic' than Europe without sacrificing being in the first world. This is supposing the majority of people going there aren't fans of some sort (unlike the most you meet on teh intarweb), in which case their reasons would be just to go follow their obsession.

No really.

It's just because anime is really popular.

Aye, don't tell them that you're American.
A friend of mine had an extended holiday in Japan. Most people where very unfriendly to him because they thought he was from the US. As soon as he told them that he was German they were much friendlier.
Sorry for the lousy German

It's not Westerners they have a particular problem with, it's Chinese, Koreans and Filipinos.

You mean there that many anime/video game fans that have enough income or initiative to actually make a trip over there?

Never disputed that. How bad does it get though? I've never heard of anyone being lynched and/or having crosses burned in front of their dwelling type deals.

Japanophiles are so freaking annoying. I went to japan, learned a lot about the culture, and became part of one of their families. I still am an american. Japanese culture is far too racist, supremacist, and power hungry.

In either case, enjoy the hell out of it!

Yeah, they were very cooperative after world war two, but their culture didn't really change. I think their cooperation was actually due in part to that whole honor thing they have. It's kind of strange. Honestly, I'd almost trust China with more with it's large military, than Japan if it had it. I suspect that as much as they have embraced modern life and science, their culture really hasn't changed as much as westerners think.

japanese are xenophobic. they don't like anybody non-japanese or anybody from another country.

from what I hear it's the worst in Okinawa. where the us marine base is. hmm.

honor thing :raise:

right before the japanese surrendered, teachers started executing their students out of fear of what the 'gaijins' would do. mainly, i think, they feared that westerners would cannibalize said students. this is hilarious when you consider the fact that the only documented cases of cannibalism in ww2 involve japanese soldiers, australian pilots and a pair of chopsticks.

but you're right, their culture hasn't changed at all. they weren't punished for their war crimes. the US government gave amnesty to japanese war criminals in exchange for medical research the japanese obtained by deliberately infecting and then vivisecting prisoners of war and chinese civilians. incidentally, the US government tried to do the same thing with the nazis (yay for the good guys!)

but i digress.

anyway, the japanese word for 'foreigner' and 'non-japanese' can be literally translated as 'barbarian' so I think it's pretty obvious they don't hold the rest of the world in high regard.

I already said, he wasn't really into KOF. He was just the arcade's top leaderboard holder. He was damn good at Street Fighter and a couple of titles I didn't know, and probably held his place with those games. I still WHOOPED him at KOF, though.

Likewise, though now days there seem to be a new synonym for Japnophiles known as "Weeaboo." Of the Weeaboos I met, they seem to have past psychological issues of loneliness and depression. I guess this leads them into thinking that Japan is their beacon of hope and that they'll have a better life if they move there. It's alright to like Japan, but to obsess over it and consider it "perfect" is very annoying.

rather ironic that they would choose the culture on the planet most likely to reject them.

I think most of the hate of American tourists in Japan comes from the fact that the tourists expect Japan to be like it is in anime.
2007-09-28, 11:06 PM #39
Really? A friend of mine, who happens to be black, visited Japan and everyone wanted to take pictures with him. Then again, come to think of it...
