right before the japanese surrendered, teachers started executing their students out of fear of what the 'gaijins' would do. mainly, i think, they feared that westerners would cannibalize said students. this is hilarious when you consider the fact that the only documented cases of cannibalism in ww2 involve japanese soldiers, australian pilots and a pair of chopsticks.
but you're right, their culture hasn't changed at all. they weren't punished for their war crimes. the US government gave amnesty to japanese war criminals in exchange for medical research the japanese obtained by deliberately infecting and then vivisecting prisoners of war and chinese civilians. incidentally, the US government tried to do the same thing with the nazis (yay for the good guys!)
but i digress.
anyway, the japanese word for 'foreigner' and 'non-japanese' can be literally translated as 'barbarian' so I think it's pretty obvious they don't hold the rest of the world in high regard.
