Direct 3d video capturing

We all know and love/hate Fraps. I like it because it's free, and 30 seconds is long enough for me to showcase what I want. I hate it because it causes JK to loose fps, thus interfering with pulse sensitive code.

I found GameCam, but it doesn't work with ... DX5? or lower, which makes JK a no go. I tried it anyway, but it didn't work. Captured JA video fantastically though. I'd seriously recommend it if you're into capturing video of games you play. It hardly hits the fps.

And then there's the host of 'pick me! pick me!' screen capturing suites which come bloated with all sorts of features, and work great without affecting fps at all. Only problem is that the lot of them make the JK hud/text/things flicker randomly, like it's capturing the screen before it's drawn everything or something.

So, does anybody have any recommendations for capturing DX3D video? I'm content with Fraps I guess, might even live with the flickering of those other guys, but I'd like to use something that works the way I want it to if it's out there.

There was a sourceforge project called taksi or something which captured video, but it slowed down the game (Condition Zero) I tried it on horribly. Plus it couldn't capture sound.

Maybe it can now. I'll look it up again...

[Edit: http://taksi.sourceforge.net/ still can't capture sound, hasn't been updated since november (dev version available on SF files for the project)]

welp your list of requirements is impossible.

for one, video cards are on an asymmetrical bus. secondly, video cards render video to an overlay surface. thirdly, converting the frame data into a usable file format - even uncompressed avi - is a cpu-intensive task (it's not like you can DMA out of video memory).

if your pulse-sensitive cog is failing after dropping the framerate to, like, 30-60 fps then it's a pretty crappy cog anyway.

Best solution would be to record your video output through S-Video or something. Isn't that how you recorded very early videos of TDiR? If I recall, you had an All-In-Wonder or something.

I use camstudio from sourceforge, I don't know if it can do fullscreen, but using the custom codecs from their site I get really high quality screen capturing without any lag or skipping.

[EDIT]It does capture sound as well, and does a fairly good job of it too.[/EDIT]

The Mega-ZZTer: Need sound capture too. :(

Jon`C: My requirements are simple, not bog down FPS as much as fraps does and capture everything drawn to the screen. :P As for my cog, it doesn't fail at all, it's an awesome cog. The points produced in the pulse just aren't as close to each other as they would be if the FPS didn't nose dive, thus causing things to move choppy rather than smoothly. (interference, not failure ;)) Fraps drops the framerate from 100+ to 15 or less, in 640*480 to boot.

Vegiemaster: I don't have that capability anymore with my current Video card. :(

Stormtrooper: You can bet I'll be checking it out. Thanks. :D
