I have one. It arrived on Friday. The coworkers I showed it to were pretty impressed with it (I had it delivered to workplace). I like it thus far. Yes, I know some features are bricked/crippled. Although I don't really use them. I think the Calendar is crippled. No skin off my back since I rarely use one anyway. It's 16 GB in size. It's solid state memory instead of magnetic (hard drive). It has 802.11a/b/g wi-fi. I was able to read the forums on it...although it was incredibly tiny.

Any of you all own one or planning to get one?

And yes, I have a thing for the harpsichord.

Cool. I like the album preview in the list.

Mmm Harpsichord.

Worth it almost just for 16gb of flash. Good for runners maybe? Possibly hard to control I guess...

If I didn't already have a 60gig ipod video, I'd probably get this. That is, 40 of my 60 gig is filled, and the rest is used for storage... so I'd really have to cut down my library.

How's battery life? Can you get wide screen movies working on the screen? Have you tried replacing the firmware with some of the iphone accessories?

Not going to happen. They encrypt the firmware for each device. If they didn't I could have the iPod Classic firmware on my 5.5g 80g video and have cover flow.

JG, we need forums on iPod pics. :D

^^ Waaaay ahead of you ^^

iPod touch glorification!

802.11a/b/g setup. It detected my wifi off the bat. Supports WPA/WPA2 (mine's set to 2 I believe). However I'm told that it doesn't support 802.1x which is a biiiig sore spot to college students since most universities use 802.1x

Aight, second post pertaining to the questions.

No, I haven't attempted to jailbreak it yet. Kind of leary doing so right now as people are still scratching the surface on jailbreaks.

I haven't used it extensively yet to test the battery life. But In the time I did use it, so far the battery meter has dropped a tick. Of course I have the wi-fi turned off as my "standard. Wi-fi devices eat battery life like it's pancakes...mmm pancakes.

I haven't played a DVD or other movie on it yet, but I did use the Youtube feature and video quality was nice. Granted Youtube videos are not DVD qualities. I'll try to fit one of my DVDs on there. I can fit about...three or four I think.

Edit: The back of the device. It reads "Without science, art is nothing." I saw it on a...harpsichord and I really liked that quote.

There is a freeware program called Handbrake that you can use to convert your videos from DVD to h.264. With that you should be able to get a few movies on there :D

If you get the Windows version it doesn't rip direct from the DVD though, you have to get the files off the DVD somehow first.

I've got the iPhone, in terms of functionality they're the same. I can't stand having to take it out each time I want to change a song or pause it. I love the interface, for sure, but they need to work on some tactile feedback for dealing with pausing/changing songs.

Handbrake is an amazing program - and presets ftw. I had an iPod touch for a few days (8GB) then exchanged it for an iPhone (which I have set up on a prepaid plan now.) I wanted some added functionality that the touch didn't have - still a great little product though. Its crazy how thin it is. I don't have a problem with 8GB either, even though my library is 55GB. I have ~500 songs on it and five films (JFK and Lawrence of Arabia being two of them.)

Do you not use the iPhone headphones anymore? Single-clicking the headphones pauses a song and double-clicking goes to the next track.

The ability to watch movies on it would be what I'd enjoy. Granted, Vista and iTunes don't even work, so I haven't used the video capabilities of my ipod in months.

Maybe when Vista first came out, but it's worked fine in Vista for a while now...

iTunes runs like *** on Vista for me. Gravely annoying. Perhaps there is a compatibility patch for Vista for iTunes.

I think it's funny how it gets progressively more and more smudged in each successive picture.

Yea that's why I'm not getting this or the iPhone. My hands are messy ALOT (Manual labour) and I get away with touching buttons carefully (or in case of iPod scrolling over the black case that it comes with). I would ruin these screens within a couple months.

This post is from my iPod touch. Needless to say, I've made numerous typos. But, it's easier than "testing."

Further trip report: Leave the Wi-Fi antenna turned OFF. You will gain 3x battery life. I was tinkering online with the device last night. In 45 mins, I was down 1/4 juice. Leaving the antenna off and just having it play music, I lost a 1/4 power in...two...three hours.

No video testing yet :(
