Dell Precision laptops come with Nvidia Quadro cards, so thats what I've got. It does a good enough job, though it has burned out on me twice now. Thank you, warranty!

Is this a complicated way of saying you're going to stop now?

Dumb poll. Brand dedication is poor consumerism.

I wasn't looking for fanboys, just wondering what people had.

Uh...yeah. It's called "investing in the best deal" and not being a brand fanboy.

It doesn't matter how much stuff I have. What matters is whether that's where I derive my happiness.

Actually, when you're preaching what you are, it does matter.

The little extras are what make america america. They're the things that are the staple of our society. A good computer, good internet, a nice car, nice shoes, etc.

A lot of other societies put more emphasis on survival and necessities, we put emphasis on the extras that working hard or smart can get you.

Point being, that you claim that you don't buy into consumerism, yet, here you sit, posting on the internet. Someone who is truly against consumerism, as you say you are, would be living in a log cabin in the woods, living off the land. I highly doubt there isn't some kind of product out there that you buy and take pleasure in owning or using.

Keep reading until you understand that there is no link between being a consumerist and how many posessions you have.

3. The fact or practice of an increasing consumption of goods.

Meaning you buy **** you don't need (that's how I take it).

Hrm, who to believe, wiki or dictionary.com

It's not a matter of who to believe. There are two different definitions, and I am clearly using one of them, so please take what I'm saying in the context of the one I am using. Obviously, if I were using the other definition, I'd be a hypocrite.

I think its possible to own things without being a consumerist. Even the amish have to buy stuff. >__>

My point is it's possible for person A with a lot of stuff to derive his happiness not from the stuff, but from something else (family, self-actualization, whatever). And it's equally possible for person B with no things to base his happiness on how many things he has. He'd be miserable, but he could do it.

I think if you buy things you are a consumER, not necessarily an IST.
2007-10-02, 7:12 PM #25
A good consumerist strives for happiness (or fulfillment if that makes your stupid conscious itch less, free) regardless of brands. This is why I said what I said. Stop being a baby.

You mean PCI-E?... Right...?

gbk uses Linux, he doesn't need PCI-E.

Umm, hell no, I mean PCI. Cheap, abundant, usable performance, and, oh yeah, you can stuff enormous amounts of them in commodity whiteboxen and build cheap, mutli-monitor workstations.

gbk, i currently employ cheap agp 4x matrox g450 cards en masse. I would like to take advantage of multiple pci slots, but the pci matrox g450 cards are far more rare than their agp variant. Can you recommend a similar pci card for high performance 2d work that is standard and well documented?

thanks

I currently have nvidia, but I have been very dissapointed with it so my next card is more likely to be an ATI, but nothing is certain.

I'd also like to know a decent PCI video card, I have an old box in my living room I want to use as a set top box (the old one blew up), except it doesn't have an AGP slot, so I'm forced to use a PCI card. I've been checking out newegg for the past couple months, and nothing has caught my eye.
