Geek or nerd?

Which term do you prefer? I call myself/others geek all the time, but generally take offense to nerd.

A lot of people don't seem to see a difference between the two, so I was wondering what everyone's opinion was.

Neither.

Geeks are just losers obsessed with stuff.

Nerds are REAL losers because they have actualy knowledge and skillz.

My girlfriend will call me a nerd sometimes if I'm playing Xbox Live with my friends. However, I think both terms nowadays don't really have the connotation that they used to. Generally, if someone was going to refer to you as having no life and only playing with electronics, they'd just call you a loser instead.

Nerd, just because of the Revenge of the Nerds movies.

Everyone has a different interpretation of how to use each word.

My interpretation:
- Geek seems to be the term for "cool" tech people, lately.
- Nerds tend to have obsessions with particular subjects that aren't mainstream. (no such thing as a fantasy football nerd) Of course there are different levels of nerdiness. Ranging from a simple book nerd to a D&D playing, Hentai fapping, slackware user that knows Klingon and/or Elven.

As your question is concerned, I don't see them as same term, so I can't really answer. Whatever is applicable, I suppose.

/edit
After deliberation, I'm a big nerd, so I would prefer to be acknowledged appropriately.

Geek. A nerd is a geek with no social life. And more esoteric.

Hey, Emon said EXACTLY what I was going to say.

And I have real life friends. So geek.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Geek, it's a nicer word. That and I've honestly never heard the word Nerd outside of tv/films/radio/theinternet.
nope.

If I'm either of those, I'm a geek. But then again, I am extremely awesome.

Aspiring to be either is retarded.

A nerd is someone with the down side of autism.
A geek is someone with the up side of autism.

There's a lot of overlap.

My comic-book-reading friend calls himself a nerd, and my D&D playing friend calls himself a geek. I don't particularly adhere to either term. I'm most often referred to as a dork, but my favourite descriptor comes from my physicist friend; "You're a bit fruity."

I think it's the most accurate denomination that still remains non-specific. edit:apparently im also dyslexic

being a "geek" is becoming cool(er) these days

I prefer geek, since I tend to associate nerd with more scholarly pursuits, and I'm a pretty poor student.

My new flatmates this year, however, tend to use 'geek' in the way a lot of people use the word 'gay'. You know, how when people say "that's so gay", they're not actually calling it a homosexual. I thought it was a little odd, but whatever.

Most of my friends call me a nerd, but, then, a good majority of them work at various software companies, so...

The term geek, to me, has more of a connotation of competence to it than nerd.
