The TV was buzzing in the background when I hear some ******* on what I thought was a sports show (WTF? Mixing genre?) ranting about how Wu-Tang had sampled (not accurate but thats what he said) "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and how he was like incredulous. I recall him *****ing about how "there are some songs you don't sample, don't cover and WMGGW is one of them!".

Man I hate that, like ****ing despise it. Everytime someone says "You just don't cover the beatles" or "you just dont cover prince" or "you just dont cover the pistols" I want to stab them in the face and skull**** them to death.

Agh.

Thank you for listening.

You don't just cover artists that are an order of magnitude more brilliant, talented, and better than you are.

This is one of the universal laws of not looking like a big group of douchebags.

It pisses me off that someone would try to cover While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

We're talking about Wu-Tang sampling The Beatles, not the other way around

Who's trying to do that?
2007-10-04, 2:54 PM #6
It would depend on how they're sampling it I guess.

I like Wu-Tang, but if they're using almost the whole song and inserting rap between the lyrics that would be lame.
2007-10-04, 2:56 PM #7
That seems unlikely, it's never been RZA's style to pull stuff like that. It's probably just a few bars
2007-10-04, 2:59 PM #8
I think it's stupidly closed minded to say a certain song should NEVER be covered/sampled. Everything is fair game IMO, however covers are subject to much more scrutiny for quality, especially when the bar is set high in the original.

Prince kicking *** and proving that anyone who says WMGGW should not be covered is simply wrong.

I don't care if people cover a song and look like douchebags. Thats awesome, at least they didn't put it up on a pedestal and try to close it off from interpretation and performance. *******s.

And they didn't sample it, they covered it really. Dhani Harrison recorded the instruments with John Frucisante (I think?) and then they laid down the lyric on top of it.

But honestly, somebody missed the point. I mean, the Beatles covered tons of artists who were probably more talented than them (at the time) but weren't as big cus they were black.

EDIT:I'm also pissed that I just spent $200 on a uniform jacket.

Another amazing cover of the song. This one is a little less orthodox but it's damn good.

I'm assuming that's why they let them clear the sample :awesome:

I don't mind covers of "great" artists. I love Godhead's cover of Eleanor Rigby, and Snake River Conspiracy's cover of Love Song (and How Soon is Now) is just amazing. I think my favorite cover ever would have to be Tool's cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter.

I like covers that drastically change the song.

Covers are fine as long as you transpose them and play them differently in my opinion. Straight covers are just gay.
Take that there and put it in here

Yeah, what's the point of covering an awesome song when all you're doing with it is the same thing? When someone covers a good song and plays it differently you can possibly have two awesome songs instead of just one (see With a Little Help from My Friends).

There are a lot of good covers out there, but I'm more annoyed by all those people who think the covers' makers have attempted to top the original. I guess some have that in mind but certainly not most of them. Hell, I just make random covers for fun and if someone likes them that's cool.

Also, hooray for using the Music Forum! woo!

you don't cover linkin park.

you just don't.

among other reasons, that guy's voice sounds like he scraped out the inside of his vocal cords with a wire brush so I'm pretty sure you'd never be able to sing any other songs ever again

songs that were upbeat and rocking should not be covered in slow measured rhythm. on the other hand, slow songs can totally rock when sped up.

Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade did an amazing live cover of Animals from Pink Floyd. Better that the original? No, but incredible nonetheless. Especially for being live.

Gary Jules' Mad World cover is infinitely better than the crapfest that was the Tears for Fears version. I actually don't generally like the Beatles musically (great lyrics though), so I didn't mind covers like the I Am Sam or the Across the Universe soundtracks.

Well considering that was from when they inducted George Harrison [who wrote the song] into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame I think that's allowed. Especially since it has Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and Dhani Harrison. :P
