Didn't see this posted, surprisingly.

Troy Hurtubise, the same guy who created a bunch of Grizzly Bear protection suits back in the 80s, has now built a more combat-oriented exo-skeleton prototype. The video basically speaks for itself.

I wonder what would happen if this were to become standard field equipment...

Edit: Another vid here:

Edit2: This is actually probably pretty old news. Still cool though. But damn, that Hurtubise fellow is pretty damn psycho.

But does it get any actual testing?

Reality is too boring for that to ever become standard field equipment.

I'd love to be proven wrong in this case, tho'

And yeah that's pretty damn ancient news and it was posted in here too.

If it can't protect you against 50 cal and uranium bullets while being lightweight and efficient at the same time, it's not worth it.

Otherwise, looks fancy and I would really like to see it be tested at least on a dummy (with that man talking fast and crazy about his :awesome: armor of course..

So.. By your logic our Interceptor 2 body armor we're issued now isn't worth the money because it doesn't stop .50 cal and Depleted Uranium tipped rounds?

It's saved atleast 15 people since I've been over here.

As for the Armor, how much does it weigh?

As far as I know, you'd be hard-pressed to find armor that can withstand .50 cal and DU rounds as it is.

For Troy's armor, I can't remember how much it weighs, but I know it's been brought up in one of the dozens of videos/articles I've seen about this in the past year.

I strongly suspect that the guy in the armor is actually Dan Akroyd.

Really old news? :P
nope.

It weighs about 50lb according to that dude. But seriously, he gets incredibly worked up over "our guys over there" in one video. Amazing passion, though he seems ... unstable.

Yep. At 200 yard a normal .50 cal round can penetrate .9 inches of hardened steel. And believe me, there is a BIG difference between regular steel and hardened steel.

It'll be a long time before we develop the kind of materials that can be implemented in body armor, and withstand that kind of force. And even if the material could, the guy in side probably couldn't.

Yeah, even Frodo had a paingasm when that troll struck him while wearing his Mithril armor.

Just curious, would a pure diamond or adamantine block be shattered if shot multiple times with a .50 cal gun?

Not happening anytime soon.

Diamond is the hardest metal known to man.

That would be ridiculously expensive body armor if made from diamond.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Not true, they've created harder material in a lab. (and diamond isn't metal)

Gluing tin cans to your chest would be more useful for body armor than diamond. Diamond would easily shatter.

Composite materials using dilatants such as d3o and traditional materials are the most promising for body armor.

Just because it's hard doesn't mean it won't shatter. It's a crystal, so I imagine that it would have pretty poor performance vs. a bullet.

Also, adamant is fictional.

Aluminum oxide has shown to be quite effective, such as with that Dragon Skin armor. There were some downsides and controversies surrounding it, but I forget what. I imagine it might shatter when hit with high velocity, high mass rounds.

The glue melted.

Seriously the glue that held the plates melted.

And it was ****ing heavy.

IT'S DOLOMITE, BABY!

[edit:] If I correctly remember back when I took geology, Diamond has a hardness level of 10. Adamantine is only 9 according to that article.

No, I was just "curious" (something off-topic but some what related) if diamond would shatter if shot at with .50 cal bullets. I never asked if it could be used as armor.
