A Computer Feature Question
2007-10-07, 8:06 PM #1
Why don't PCs have radio tuners built into them? Tuners are tiny these days, and it seems like an easy/handy little feature to stick into a computer. There are external ones you can buy, but why don't they come standard?

Media Center PCs tend to, as a rule. My latest one came with an FM tuner. I wish AM tuners were as easy to find. At least they weren't a couple years back.

Good question. Power usage maybe?

No demand for it? Internet radio and P2P is supreme.

Unfortunately, all satellite radio is encoded at 96 Kbps at best. With a proper antenna and receiver (i.e. very large, high gain antenna mounted on your roof), FM radio is far better than any digital radio.

Yeah, because, all of us have massive antennas on our roofs for listening to FM radio. Not that the broadcasting stations broadcast at high quality anyway.

But yeah, most TV tuners have had FM reception on them since... well... over 15 years ago?

FM for music. AM for information.

Don't be a smartass. It was clear I wasn't speaking generally.

Okay, FM for singing heads and AM for talking heads.

I know. I don't want to debate either. My point is that satellite radio is ****ty quality for no good reason, and it's annoying.

I think a better question is why don't mobos come with TV tuners built in.

Because they require large inputs, have bulky chipsets, get warm, and at least for HDTV, are expensive >.>
