Dystopian-themed films, recommendations?
2007-10-07, 9:31 PM #1
I recently realized that I really love films with a dystopian future theme, especially ones dealing with revolution. The Matrix, Equilibrium, V for Vendetta and Children of Men are some of my favorite films. I loved Fahrenheit 451 and I've been meaning to read 1984. Are there any other films with similar themes I should know about?

I really really enjoy dystopic stuff too.

You could try Gatacca or Logan's Run.

Emon, I was just thinking that too while I was playing through HL2:Episode 1 tonight for the first time.

I think it would be cool to actually live in a dystopia.

Oh yeah, Logan's Run! That's one I was meaning to watch. I've seen Gattaca and loved that, too.

Yeah, I've heard of Escape from LA and New York. I've seen some of the Mad Max stuff but not any of them all the way through, I think.

It is my new goal to see all of these movies.

The 80's 1984 has full frontal.

But the girl has brown triangle of bush death.

:v:

I saw a film called The Postman on demand at my parent's house, and despite poor reviews, I thought it was really, pretty good.

Animal farm is a good dystopian-themed book.
Don't know about any films though.

It would suck in that it's a dystopia, but be awesome in that fictional dystopias are usually depicted as being on the verge of huge technological discoveries and philosophical realizations leading to a utopia.

The Time Machine (the old one, the new one sucks)
Sorry for the lousy German

The 1984 book was neat, no idea about the movie.

And dear f***ing God yes, Blade Runner is awesome. They're releasing a new grand-spanking-fantastic DVD set in December, too. A shame there's no word about a new, actually proper soundtrack release... /_\

Dark City was great too. I heard Brazil was also dystopian-themed, but I've never seen it.

Brazil is both dystopian-themed and a very good film.

But seriously, Brave New World ought to be on your reading list too.

The new one is cool, In its own way. I prefer to distance the two.

I was going to mention that, but then I realized it's not dystopian at all, but in fact Britain in reality!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Serenity, though I suppose that's not as high-blown dystopian as a lot of others considered such.

Heresy! Put Mad Max on your to-watch list.

RoboCop would also be set in a dystopia, but dodge 2 & 3 unless you're prepared to use beer to help you through it.

I'd also reccommend Metropolis (1927), but there are several versions around, I've seen I think two, both were ok, but you might want to look on imdb/wikipedia or somewhere to find out which is considered the better one.

I recommend reading the short story "The Machine Stops", by E. M. Forster. It was written about a hundred years ago.

The 90's movie of Brave New World is TERRIBLE. Don't waste your time/money to see it.

I second the vote for The Postman. Highly recommend that film.

I've heard some good things about A Scanner Darkly. Never saw it though.

scanner darkly was okay. its just that nothing really happened in it. and the cel shading got kind of annoying like...15 minutes in.
My girlfriend paid a lot of money for that tv; I want to watch ALL OF IT. - JM

A Scanner Darkly was really quite amazing...and if you paid close attention it was filled with a lot of intrigue, and a lot of sadness.

I need to watch that movie again.

Would Threads count? Probably not but its an old (Read:Banned for a while) post-nuclear movie.
