What is your favorite level or overall level design in a game? It might be best to separate genres.

FPS:
JK: Level 2
DoD: Normandy Beach

Puzzle:
Balance: Timed Map 1

RPG:
Zelda A Link To The Past: Cave Temple
ᵗʰᵉᵇˢᵍ๒ᵍᵐᵃᶥᶫ∙ᶜᵒᵐ
ᴸᶥᵛᵉ ᴼᵑ ᴬᵈᵃᵐ
2007-10-12, 11:06 AM #2
FPS: Dark Forces level 4 (the Phrik testing facility)

Puzzle: (well, I can't think of any puzzles with a lot of level design other than portal...) that said, the big turret room near the end of Portal.

RPG: The gladiator arena escape at the beginning of Dark Sun

Damn this is a very difficult question. I basically love any type of wide-open snowy areas with a bunch of structures and caves and whatnot, I really liked the snowy levels in SoF. I also like huge structural stuff where there is a mix of indoors and then outdoors on girders, rooftops, beams, bridges, etc. I believe there was some of this on the CoD dam level. Some of the levels in Heavy Metal: FAKK2 were awesome, too.

I also like the huge levels in games like Serious Sam where they just keep going and going. Serious Sam doesn't have a lot of detailed architecture compared to today's games, but at the time, the huge levels and incredible viewing distance was awesome.

Puzzles, meh, probably something from Zelda III but I forgot.

Which one is "Cave Temple" in a link to the past?

I can't remember. I've got the game here, so I'm going to quick run through and see if I can find the proper name.

I don't really have gaming on my mind right now, but the Warthog escape at the end of The Maw is so awesome.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

If you pick a random level from JK's SP or MP, chances are it's one of the greatest ever made.

Zelda64's Water Temple.

HHAHAHAHAHA no really, how about 95% of Super Mario World?

JK level 4, particularly the part with the skeleton structure suspended over the water. I'm still impressed when I play that level.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Probably The Sword (Constantine's mansion) from Thief, especially in Thief Gold, if you find the secret area.

JK level 9.

The fuel pipes level? Yeah, I always thought that that particular level design was inspired.

My favorites:

FPS Single Player: JK fuel pipe level.
Multiplayer: DoD:S - Avalanche - the most balanced multiplayer map I've played.

Puzzle: Myst 2: Riven - pretty much all of it, though I like the last puzzle in the dome.

RTS: CoH: Normandy. Feels like actual Normandy.

RPG: Can't really decide amongst Windwaker and Twilight Princess dungeons. Both are very good.

I can't seem to remember any specific levels, but the city design in both Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior were fantastic. Neat "secret" apartment rooms everywhere, fun to explore... really neat. Especially on the third episode of Duke3D. Classic.

Yet I have to mention the final Sith levels of MotS. So underrated, yet they were so atmospheric, awesomely done and had a huge impact on me. Neat!
Star Wars: TODOA | DXN - Deus Ex: Nihilum

BF1942: Omaha Beach.

64 man omaha was the most fun I've had in MP FPS.
nope.

Turtle Rock? Ugh. I did not like that one. I had to fill up all four of my bottles with green potion.

Halo's Library level. Awesome, right? Good times there.

the opening train station in Half Life 2.
The caves in the Mehrune's Razor thing for Oblivion.

2007-10-14, 1:38 AM #29
FPS: Dark Forces, The Executer.

RPG: Diablo II, Act 5. All of it had a really great atmosphere. It might have something to do with the fully orchestrated music.

Puzzle/adventure: Psychonauts, the Mail Man conspiracy.
My blawgh.
2007-10-14, 6:20 AM #30
FPS: Dark Forces Mount Kurek (Man I cant get over how awesome it is)

Puzzle: Pretty much all of Dreamfall

RPG: KOTOR 2 Onderon (During the attack)

FPS: Jedi Knight Level 9 (Only because I got stuck in it for like 3 hours once)

Puzzle: The demo of Ico on PS2 (or LoK: Soul Reaver on PSX)

RPG: Zelda: OoT - Forest Temple. It creeped the crap out of me.

Forest Temple from OoT as well.

thirding Forest Temple. Although my favorite from OoT is the Spirit Temple. Music and atmosphere make it.
