It went pretty well, I guess. I'm a sideman (bass playa) for Nik & Sam; identical twin girls (they're 16, btw) that signed with Warner Bros back in July. Kirbs, none of their bluegrass stuff is online, just some of their country:
Nik & Sam's Myspace. I only bobbled a couple of notes, so I was pleased my end of things. Not bad for only two rehearsals, and not playing any of the songs since July 4th. Besides, I don't play wrong notes any more; I play
jazz.
The crowd didn't seem too enthused to see us, but still gave the girls (Nik & Sam) a good response at the "meet & greet" table. I lucked out and didn't have to play through my combo amp, instead I played through a stack that was taller than I was - and it was a' thumpin! Sound crew was great to work with for a change, they were nice, and actually knew what they were doing.
Coolest part of the day was when the Segway salesman came over. Kelly Pickler's band wanted a ride, but they were out getting hammered when he showed up, so me and the drummer got free rides instead. That was pretty awesome.
As far as Kelly Pickler went, she stayed holed up in the bus almost the whole day, sending the band to the hotel, and she only ventured out a few times (in her pajamas, no less). It seems stardom has gotten to her a bit: she
has to have Fiji brand bottled water (in the squarish bottles), and the twins got fussed at by one of her managers for drinking it (I took one anyway while she was on stage - it doesn't taste any different than Dasani). She also
has to have a container of peanut butter. Fortunately, Sam scooped some out with her finger before we found out it was "Kelly's".
Of course, she didn't talk to us, but her band didn't seem to want to associate with us either, which was kinda surprising. Usually, the "important" people have been good about conversing with us and whatever (SHeDAISY invited them on the bus to relax last year, Billy Ray Cyrus jammed with them a bit and named one of their songs). We even performed with a bunch of Nashville blue-hairs last year, and they were a lot more amicable than these folks. Oh well. Nobody's perfect, I guess. We split after her third song, and went to eat. For the record, the Monte Cristo sandwich at Shorty Small's is strangely tasty.
