Well, the foreign policy of the USA is just an extension of their internal politics so the rest of the world is, paradoxically enough, in a secondary role in anything that happens in that field. Foreign relations included.

It's a super power, after all.

They should fire back a resolution that calls what we did to the native americans genocide.

Its nice to know that our government is dealing with important issues like this instead of working on solving current real world problems.

It's a little jarring to see the Bush administration argue against something because they think it will alienate our allies.

True.

What I don't understand is why they feel they must do this now as opposed to some other time. Perhaps there have been times in the past where passing this resolution could have done more harm, but not many. We passed no resolution condemning the action when it took place (though perhaps going to war against them could be seen as a form of disapproval) The Armenian genocide was terrible and all, but I would think we could at least wait until relations with Turkey aren't so important to out national interests before taking a step like this. Unless we're trying to provoke them into a war so we have an excuse to pummel them and create a Kurdish state. Otherwise our non-actionable resolution time would be better-spent on condemning past atrocities committed by us.

Oh dude, was gonna post about this. This is sort of a topic because the LA county has a lot of Armenians.

If they say "YES" Armenians will be happy and Turks won't be. Plus, doesn't the U.S. Military have to fly over Turkey's airspace to get to Iraq? The turks can say "we won't be your ally" for admitting the Armenian Genocide.

If America says "NO" turks will...eh can't say happy...but won't be mad at us for saying the Armenian Genocide happened. However, there will be a huge community of Armenians angry at the U.S.

Either way, it's a Catch-22 for America.

By the way if you didn't know, SoaD's members are all Armenian.

 not sure if this was directed at me or not... but just for the record. i think this resolution (and most resolutions in general) is pointless and really poorly timed. weather what happened in 1915 (thats right, nearly a hundred years ago) was a genocide or just a bloodbath could be an important point to argue, but CERTAINLY not right now. its not that im against the Armenians at all, quite the contrary aside from SoaD i have no problem with them. however im sure the Armenian population in the U.S. is at least somewhat aware of the precarious situation we are in with Turkey, and they are still insisting that we go through with this resolution, to our own detriment. WTF is that!?

PS: i disdain SoaD :ninja:

I think he was referring to SAJN.

Anyway, what happens when Turkey says STFU because of this and actually does come over the border to chase and kill Kurds as well as denying us any flyover/stopover rights at their airbases and possibly take pot shots at us?

And this would be new how? What are they going to do start a civil war? They can just be angry till this resolution comes around again, preferably at a FAR more convenient time.

The United States is not on the best of terms with Turkey right now as it is, but this resolution is hardly an excuse for them to annex Kurdistan and destroy NATO. Foreign policy decisions are generally irrelevant when not made by the White House, even when there is a lame duck in it.

Turkey is a terrible country and they will use this as an excuse to ethnically cleanse the Kurds. I don't know what form that demented logic will take but it's going to happen.

The Armenian Genocide never happened. The Armenians are like the Jews of the Near East. They have all too much control, and they're too lazy to do anything for themselves, so they started this rumor to get something for nothing. I can't believe how people are defaming the great state of Turkey.

I think it's time to bring out the real reason behind what happened. It was the apricots. If you check the numbers, you will see Turkey is the world's largest producer of these fruits. But what has this to do with Armenians, one might ask. Everything. The scientific name of apricot is Prunus armeniaca. This in itself reveals us the root of everything: The ancient Turks were always envious of the apricots of the Armenians, and thus a hundred years ago they finally snapped, slaughtered the Armenians, and stole their ancestral secrets of apricot cultivation. And the rest is the history which made Turkey the greatest producer.

What the **** mother****ers? First you want to pull out of Iraq, so that the Kurds can try to break away as an independent state because they will be oppressed by the Iraqi administration we put in. Then when Turkey doesn't accept an independent Kurdistan because then the Kurds in Turkey will try to break away and we all know that would just be terrible. And now you want to give them more reason to hate the Kurds and further provide a catalyst for the middle east to be a ****ing powderkeg.

WHAT THE **** MOTHER****ERS? Good Job Uncle Sam, you continue to make me regret ever wanting to work for you.
