Autism

So, today a kid with autism moved into my math analysis class. He's only 12, and to those of you who don't know what that is, certain noises can set him off into a fit and he'll start making groaning noises. Our teacher gave us plently of warning about his condition; however, today he comes in, and the class won't shut up. About 15 seconds after being intoduced he began having fits, but the class refused to keep quiet. My question is, how can people blatanly ignore the fact that they're tormenting this poor kid? I mean, he hugging his mother freaking out and all you can think about is how drunk you got over the ****ing weekend? Let's think a little maturely here; folks, and think of other peoples feelings.

I think it's because no one cares.

I know I don't. It's not my fault he gets set off easily, and it isn't his fault either.
2007-10-15, 3:03 PM #3
Everyone shouldn't have to change for one f***ing kid. He should go to a "special" class.

12 year olds get drunk? Autistic kids with reactionary tweaks are integrated now? What?

Quit trying to fit in by insulting. You sound like a ****ing moron.

Math analysis is a class usually reserved for 16-17 year olds. The kid must be gifted mathematically. In that respect, I disagree with Guess. His talent would go to waste in the special class. There's probably a good compromise.

If he can't count cards for me in vegas he isn't any good.

Unless he can also count spilled toothpicks. Thats a neat trick.

But the question still begs to be answered, drunk 12 year olds? You know they're lying, right? Granted, I drank at 12, but I certainly didn't brag about it. The kids who ARE drinking at 12 are flirbed up, not "cool."

Card-counting is the exact kind of task the autistic excel at.

Kirby, the facts seem to imply that the 12 year old is mathematically gifted, and is in enrolled in an analysis class geared toward 17 year olds (high school seniors), although your point about public bragging remains somewhat valid.

This is kind of a "No **** Shirlock"

But I say that people should not have to change for just one child.
That doesn't mean be disrespectful.

In my high school stagecraft class, we have several students who are autistic.
Generally, they get along with the rest of my class. Many regular students go up to the autistic students and chat. They are now a "normal" part of class.
As cool as this may be, I can see it is not the case for you.

I know people shouldn't have to change, but when they have to raise the levels of their voice to speak over him, I get pissed off.

tell him to get lost

an autistic kid in art class tried to kill me with scissors

I concur.

Yeah, I'm in a Math Analysis class and it's basically pre-cal stuff. Autistic kids are usually smart but can't control themselves, like kids with Tourette syndrome.

If your school actually did something like that they sure are fagholes. Was it up to the parents? I mean some parents go overboard wanting to see their kids in more advanced classes and all. Either way I feel sorry for the kid. I hope he goes through this well.

Well, explain it more. He reacts to loud noises, so the class was really loud? I'm confused. If he's a 12 year old genius, or even gifted, home school or private teachers is a much more logical step. Public senior classrooms is just disruptive and a waste of time, both his and everyone else's.

Sounds like the students were going out of their way to be jerks about it. They could use a good talking to about common courtesy.

Stop posting the same thing in every thread where people don't hug. No one's saying "hur hur, retard." They're saying "What a waste of the class' time."

This is a standard Math Analysis class... mostly 16 and 17 year olds, and I have no clue why he's in here. He's an absolute genious in math, he easily understands concepts in minutes when it takes most of the class weeks. Why they put him in a standard math analysis class is beyond me, but I was just wishing people could show a little more respect. Why they can't sometimes is beyond me..
2007-10-15, 3:53 PM #22
What were they doing? I still don't understand the situation. Please respond to one of my posts.

We were supposed to be working on our assignments. Instead, the majority of people talked, and repeatedly shouted and made strange noises to (not intentionally) upset him. Every time he would moan louder, the class just talked louder. It seemed I was the only person who heard the teachers warning to be quiet. Also, the teacher didn't seem to care.

I have a step-cousin that's autistic. I only see him for ~two weeks out of a year.

Autistic people have really a hard time concentrating and dealing with people. The reason why he's in there is because autistic people have excellent memories and can see patterns more easily, even at a much earlier age.
2007-10-15, 5:10 PM #26
Maybe people were trying to treat him normally, thinking he was being himself, and not trying to draw attention to it? A lot of people are more ignorant to this kind of thing, as opposed to being disrespectful.

I Wasn't insulting...
You said some people were talking of being drunk, thus the drunkards.
And the 12 year-old is in this class...why?
2007-10-15, 6:02 PM #28
I had an autistic kid in class a few years ago, but he had it pretty severe. He had an aide with him, and she was not a pleasant person to work with. Thankfully, he wasn't in my class for long - he had a tendency to ask male teachers about their... er, nether-regions.

Your stupidity and bad grammar insults me.
And the 12 year-old is in the class cause he's probably smarter than you.

Otherwise, let's hope everything goes well with that kid's situation.

Ok sorry, Geez someone else could have just pointed that out.
2007-10-15, 6:25 PM #35
It's funny because imsoshort and warlockmish probably have mild autism or some mild cognitive disorder themselves. Not to say that's bad or even to insult them. I have a bit of dyslexia and mild schizophrenia/OCD. It's just funny that they're attacking eachother over social disorders.

No, you fail because you don't understand the simple fact that this kid was put in a higher class than normal because he excels at math. It has been stated repeatedly in this thread. If you aren't going to read, a forum is not the place for you.

Well, sometimes I have short memory loss (usually when I'm angry though) where I can't think of a word when I know what it is. Mild OCD too. I routinely check if my alarms are on at least 3 times right before i go to bed. No one is perfect.

Hay guys, I totally make my PB&J the same way every time, I must have OCD. :v:

It annoys me to no end when people say stupid stuff like that. One of my friends does it all the time. Mental disorders aren't cool, and even though it would explain a lot of people in this thread, I doubt any of you are actually handicapped.
2007-10-15, 7:10 PM #40
I've been diagnosed with medically induced OCD.
