Driver's Ed... where people go to learn physics.

As you increase your driving speed, both your body and your vehicle acquire kinetic energy which eventually must be: (a) absorbed by your brakes, engine compression forces, or other friction in a controlled stop, or (b) absorbed by your body, your vehicle's body, and the objects you hit if you are involved in a crash.

Oh hey, you can't coast to a stop, you either apply the brakes or hit something.

Drivers ed works like this. You read the book a couple times, take the tests, drive, get your license, and forget everything.

Or rather, you probably already know it in the first place so there's nothing to forget.

You can coast to a stop, it just takes longer. The forces of friction there are your engine compression and the friction of the the tires on the road.

You can't coast to a stop if your car's in drive (and you're not going uphill, I guess). >.>

There's very little to drivers ed to "memorize." Anyone who fails the written exam even once shouldn't be allowed to drive. Seriously.

Drive a manual, it's much better.

Also, Kirby speaks truth.

Bah, whatever. They have moronic signs that have completely meaningless pictures on them that no sane person could ever interpret. In driver's ed, it's your job to go through all those signs and figure out what the pictures are supposed to mean. Like the one with the car tire tracks behind it. How was I supposed to know it didn't mean "Do a burnout right here?"

I failed my written. the whole test was about numbers. How many feet behind a school bus, ambulance, fire truck, how many feet to have brights on or off, how many inches to park from curb?" I cant remember that crap. The next day I retook it, and got the question "What sign is a red octogon?"

My truck is a manual.

And yes it is.

You may think these things are stupid to learn, but you'll soon realize that a lot of drivers on the road are complete morons.

Therefore, a lot of people are complete morons. A huge suprise.

What they really need to do is make the practical test much harder, such that only, say, 50% of people could pass it. Could you imagine how many problems this would solve? No more traffic congestion, drastically reduced rates of car accidents... also it would create real political incentive to create workable public transit, which, once implemented, probably a lot of the drivers would use as well. Also, taking half the vehicles off the road would probably help with that pesky Global Warming thing.

Or, just ban cars completely in cities and make them public-transit-only. I honestly don't know why anyone uses personal vehicles in cities anyways; it's much cheaper (and often just as fast) to take the bus/subway/whatever, once you factor in the cost of gas, parking, maintenance, etc.

Bicycles are also good.

They should seriously force everyone that is physically able on two wheels before they put them on four.

You don't learn so many bad habits with the constant fear of other people's stupidity causing you severe bodily harm looming over you.

My Driver's Ed teacher told us (I haven't verified this) that it takes like four years to get your license in Germany, but despite this they still have more accidents per driver, or some other such statistic. He claimed that this was because the rigorous testing program gives drivers a false sense of security in their abilities.

Anyone know if there's any truth to that?

The more accidents per driver thing could be thanks to things like autobahns. :P

And like other people said, drive a manual already.
nope.

too true...
personally, i think it would be nice if they had some test that if you pass you get your license earlier...I'm tired of waiting. :(
