I'm looking for a good German textbook. Can someone recommend me one that you have used in the past and was really well written? I need something aimed toward beginning German students.

...as in the Language of German, or are you going over to Germany to study?

:P

You should probably just take German at your highschool. They will provide you with a textbook.

I seriously doubt you'd be able to teach yourself german.

Unless it's like my highschool, and the only language they have is Spanish.

...

You're not going to learn German by a text book. You need an instructor.

The textbook that my instructor gave to me is called "Komm Mit!", which was published in 1992. The School board cut funds and classes to German in my district when I was in High school two years ago, so in retaliation, he gave all the textbooks to his students. >.>

It sucks because it introduced the Ablative and Genitive after the Dative. But that seems to be the trend nowadays. I learned more from my instructor than the book though.

The "Komm Mit!" series is what we used at my high school, had that for all four years.

"Komm Mit" is really great for beginners, and Blickpunkt is better when they get more advanced... but Komm Mit comes with fun videos that the class is guarenteed to chuckle at.

Damnit, I can't remember what my German texbook was, now. Something beginning with E. And it had such delightful characters such as Akiko Kato. And a poster about Total Recall. And the quintessential...

Yes, I'm grasping at straws here, I know. :psyduck:

In all serious, you need a good teacher. That's what got me a B at GCSE... compared to French, which I always sucked at because we had no decent French teachers.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

The videos were a trip, so over the top. Although they weren't as bad as some other series (can't remember the name, or find it with a quick google search) that was filmed in Carlsbad, CA. It was weird seeing these videos for the first time in Florida, and realizing that I knew 80% of the locations they filmed at.

Bull****.

If you get into a daily routine with audiotapes and a good textbook, anyone can teach themselves a language. English is a fairly awful first language to have, as it doesn't have declensions or cases or genders so these will be entirely new concepts. This makes it fairly difficult for English-speakers to learn a new language, but it's entirely a myth that it's impossible.
Once you've learnt two or three languages, it gets much easier.

Lol, I loved those videos! I wish we used them in college, it would make the class so much better... although we did get to watch Run Lola Run, which was fun since they don't translate all of the curse words correctly!

Y'all may like this too... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrYRY6kx550
