it wouldn't be top-of-the-line, but it'd be a decent one if you search well enough.

I would say yes, if you buy the components on Newegg and build it yourself. No if you're buying from Dell or Compaq or whoever...
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

solution: have the parts shipped to me.. I'll build it for you... then keep it

Yes.
My HP Pavilion a6030n+ a 600 watt psu+ a X1950 pro= 8-900 dollars of awesome.

However this was because of sales, So i don't know what luck you will have.

Depends on your defination of 'decent'. I think you can find a dual core cpu, 2 gigs of ram, and a single Geforce8800 system for just under $1000. Many of the sites that advertise in pc gaming magazines allow you to customize nearly every aspect of the hardware online.

Visit something like buyxg.com, and see how much a system that will make you happy will cost.

building computer psh... easy!

straight out of the box attach Processor and Motherboard together

Screw motherboard to case

Put on any Gel Compound and heatsink/Fan

id put in hard drives and dvd/R players in next

now put in Video card/sound card/Anything else PCI-E/PCI/AGP whatever

put in power supply and plug and chug and split connections

If you have Fan Mounts screw in fans with screws....

Turn on the power then listen for all the Error BEEPS your computer is about to make.

3 Hours later of yelling and cut fingers after getting to close to the CPU fan

You have yourself a homemade computer!

It'd be better if you told us what games you'd like to play, if you have a preference for other functions of the PC, and how much user-involvement you'd like to have. We can give you the specs for a machine that can run HL2 rated games decently, but otherwise it's a tough sell. You might consider a gaming laptop in the 1200 dollar range, as it's going to provide a more portable experience, and will have better resale possibilities in the future.

With a problem so intermittent and mysterious, that it can only be solved by either randomly RMAing parts, or hiring a priest to perform and exorcism.

I'd like something that can run HL2EP2, TF2, Portal, STALKER, BF2...stuff like that with reasonably high settings and some elbow room to at least be able to play stuff that comes out in a couple years with a decent framerate, even if I have to turn down the settings.

As for other preferences for usage...maybe some video-editing, I think that's about it.

Anyway, I've got a laptop, looking for a desktop this time but thanks :v:

Yeah, that's a pretty tough job. A dual core is almost a must, and then you need a graphics card that is going to scale with the new games, and lastly 2 gigs of ram. We're talking 1500 on a bad day. If you build it, we're talking significantly cheaper.

I'm certainly not the most qualified member on the forums though. Someone else could give you a good build that might do what you ask for cheaper.

Heres my specs, 950 dollars
Started with a base Pavilion a6030n and went from there (even base plays HL2 at max, just no hdr)

Base package
Dual core 2.5 GHZ 4800+
290 Gig HDD
Lightscribe DVD/CD burner/reader
15 in one card reader...thing
Obligatory HP media drive bay
Nforce 430 mobo with;
Geforce 6150
AC97 surrond audio
expansion with 1 PCI-E and 1 PCI, can add 3 more HDDs

I added on-
A Radeon X1950 pro 256 meg GDDR3 at 575 MHZ core clock,
And (Most needed part of all) a 600 watt PSU

Total cost? 950$

In closing, Yes you can. Look closely, use sales to your advantage, and just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's crap.
2007-10-19, 10:14 PM #18
I'd ask NoESC for this...
Back again

Yes. If you build it, you can get a rapeage machine.

If not it'll be a mediocre in the end POS dell probably.

AMD Athlon X2 4800 Dual-Core (~2.5 ghz)
nForce Fatal1ty 590 AMD SLI motherboard
2gb G.Skill DDR2 RAM
nVidia 7900 GS graphics card
160 gb hard drive
550w Rosewill PSU
Audiomax 5.1 HD Surround Sound Card
DVD/CD Burner combo lightscribe
Nice Aspire case with analog guages, fan speed control, and temperature gauge

$830

If I were you though I'd get a better graphics card then mine, one that has DirectX 10.

It is affordable, just go on newegg and play around with parts, sometimes you have to sacrifice and upgrade later (IE, less RAM, cheaper MB, smaller HD).

Don't buy a base computer and upgrade it. Build YOUR OWN. Tiberium you're using an HP motherboard? I don't want to even go there.

Go for Directx10! If that's the only advice you take, take that. I wish I had it right now, even if I bought a slower card just to get the graphics detail in the Orange Box at would it could be.

Don't let one bad experience building one totally turn you off to it. I've had times where it was hard too, and a lot of the times you run into problems and have to fix them, and spend a lot of time troubleshooting, but it worth it. If TE can install a graphics card then you can most certainly build a computer, or fly to the moon, or become world ruler etc.

Not a bad idea. My first computer build, i took it to my friends house where he assembled it and everything, I watched and learned how to do it. Even if you have to pay someone you know like $50 to assemble it and load an OS on it for you, it's worth it.

Try customizing one of these from IBuyPower. 2GB RAM is a must. My friends have copied some of these part for part on Newegg, and it these guys are still cheaper. (It's not fair for those of us who enjoy doing it ourselves. :( )

That's a good deal, and with a directx10 card (even though it's not a real fast one).

One not get that one and upgrade as you go along?

I wouldn't exactly trust Knightrider2000's computer advice.
2007-10-20, 4:31 PM #29
Whats really great is HP will sell me an extra 2 gigs of fastish ram for just 100 bucks.
2007-10-20, 5:07 PM #30
Not really...
2007-10-20, 5:47 PM #31
Don't listen to Knightrider--I've heard HORRIBLE HORRIBLE things about ibuypower, not to mention if you're gonna pay for someone to make your computer, you may as well get a warranty that actually gets honored out of it.

Basically just don't listen to Denominator.

I'd offer to build a PC for you buy it'd cost a grand for the parts probably, plus shipping to you :\

E: The 8600GTS is a waste of money--at least get an X1950XT (best bang for your buck, and DX10 isn't a necessity as of yet, and probably won't be for a year, maybe two.)

1) I did not introduce that website, Veggiemaster did.

2) Veggiemaster is right, some of those PCs can offer you a better deal than Newegg. I usually shop between Newegg and Tiger Direct to get the best deals.

3) I merely pointed out on that site and said that one of those PCs wasn't a bad deal, for someone who wants one built for them, with a legal copy of Vista on it.

4) Yes I did state that graphics card was slow, you don't need to repeat it.

5) DirectX 10 is NOT a necessity, but based on these screenshots it is a remarkable improvement, and a lot of games support it now.
http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9550

6) I don't know what you "heard" about that site, but it can probably offer a better warranty than you. Are you willing to replace a component on that computer if it breaks with your own money? Warranties are case-specific for all companies.

Just a few points I'd like to point out, thank you.

X1950 Pro for 200 bucks. A wee bit slower but still great.
(Hey denominator? Stop hijacking.)

Direct x10 is worthless right now. Those flight sim shots are **** it looks a hell of a lot better on DX9.
